Newspaper Circulation Declines Continue

Daily newspaper circulation continued its foreboding, mostly across-the-board plunge in circulation, according to the figures just announced for the last six months ending in March. Even blue chips like The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the New York Post suffered steep declines, prompting talk that the next turn in the industry's ongoing downward spiral -- another round of layoffs -- is looming on the horizon. A case in point: the Orange County Register, where weekday circulation fell nearly 12 percent.
