If only the holidays and the end of the fiscal year weren't so inextricably bound together. That way The New York Times Co. wouldn't have needed to make the Scrooge-approved announcement this week that it would lay off a dozen support employees within the newsroom, along with a hiring freeze that appears to have some teeth... SmartMoney No. 2 and former top editor Fleming Meeks heads back to Barron's, from whence he originally came.
