So I've been in business as a full-time freelancer for a little over a year now. And while I have a personal page on mediabistro.com, I am at the point where I need to develop a more professional-looking Web presence.

For those of you who have your own Web site, did you build your own or did you have someone build it for you? If the latter, how much did you pay for the work and how long did it take? Any other general/helpful advice out there?

Thanks so much!

I built it myself using Authors Guild software designed for writers. I did it when they first came out with it a few years ago and actually had fun with the design. They have lots of different templates. You can build a free est website here just to try it out: http://www.authorsguild.net/

Thanks Nellie! I'll check that out!

Paid a designer to create mine. I don't like templates.

I used a template as well... I just figured it was about time. It also looked a lot better than what I had before -- nothing!

Not to change the subject, basenji... but do you feel that the FM is worth it? I have it and am wondering if I should keep it. It hasn't been long... I am just not that patient. Ha!

One positive aspect of doing it yourself with a template is that you can change and update the content daily weekly or whenever you feel like it. I know too many people with fancy websites that are outdated because they can't get their web person to make little changes. Or can't afford to pay for someone to update their site.

you make a good point about the updating but I have absolutely no interest in computer stuff and think my
own time is better spent on writing and pitching- those
are my stongest skills.

That had a lot to do with my decision too, nellie bly. I am sure professional ones can be updated, but I didn't want to have to worry about IT issues. I also wanted it up quickly.

All good advice/feedback. Thank you!

Rachel, as for FM ... yes, I have found my membership to be well worth it. I have received several inquiries and a couple of regular clients via FM in the past year (length of my membership). But in combination with what I would call "passive marketing" (and I would characterize an FM profile that way), I also actively contact publishers and clients I'd like to work for. So in short, the FM profile/membership is just one of several tools I use to find work.

Thanks basenji. I do send out a lot of pitches and try to make contacts. I too use the FM listing as just another way to (hopefully) get work. I had one nibble... just anxious!
