I just got asked to do a 500-word advertorial, but don't know what to tell them about my fee structure (they asked). I've written advertorials before but as a perma-lancer for a CN pub, so it was per hour (and below market-rate, before I knew the market paid more).

Any ideas what to say to this question? What's a fair rate for someone with experience (medium, not beg, not top of the game).

Ask for no less than $2.00 per word, which I believe is the going rate for advertorial copy.

Dammit, they wanted my response yesterday, so I said 1.50 (and got it). Next time I'll know better. Thanks.

i've been doing this kind of work for 2 years for about 10 different clients and nobody is at $2 a word....$1.50 is what i get from all of them. this is in the tech sector, big enterprise companies.

I do a lot of advertorial work, and I get anywhere from $1 to $2.25 a word depending on length, complexity, the client, and my mood when they ask what I'd charge.

As a general rule, I'd say $1.50 is average.
