Glad to know I'm not the only one struggling to track down the editor(s) at the NYTimes Travel Section!

An insider friend, who contributes quite regularly to the publication, suggested the most direct method is submitting to the slush pile at travelmail@nytimes.com. No need to address a particular editor.

Fine. I give up. Off to the slush pile I go!

But what is the proper greeting, if it's addressed to no one in particular?

"Dear editor..."

"To Whom It May Concern..."

"Hey, you, in the Travel Section, read this pitch..."

To find the name of an editor, have you tried calling?

I sure did (powered to do so after reading the "why are we afraid to call" posts!). But I still got the same answer: email it to the slush pile.

So, I'm ready to toss my ideas into the Great Unknown of general email addresses and see if I get a nibble. The greeting, though, is where I'm hung up. I hate the sterile hospital feeling of a simple "Dear Mr./Ms. Editor."

So impersonal. So boring. But (apparently) so necessary.

i sent a pitch to that email about a year ago and got a nice response of no thanks. then i saw they ran the piece a few months later. anyways...yes, the address seems to work. although i just sent them something recently and have yet to hear back. i didn't address it to anyone in particular either time.

Never send anything addressed to dear editor.
It is not hard to find out this information, and
isn't this what reporters do? You dig for info.
