Barack Obama calls a Michigan female TV news reporter "Sweetie" in a sexist demeaning tone after she asked an important question.

How would you feel if you were a female TV news reporter and someone tried to lessen your question by calling you "Sweetie" and not in a good way?

ok that's pretty rough. Ouch.

Agreed - and if this were Hillary the media would be all over it. She quoted an AP report and used the egregious term "white" and was burned alive for it.

totally agree with baile. i'm not a hillary fan but if she said something like this.....whoa! it's like the time obama was talking about white attitudes and said that his grandmother was "a typical white person" in her feelings toward blacks. i can't even begin to imagine if hillary, or any public person, used the term "typical black person" and lived to tell about it!

At least we now know who the real...
At least we now know who the REAL BIGOT in this race is...OBAMA. His MENTOR of 20 years is a BIGOT and now Obama shows he did indeed fully indoctrinate himself to Wright's bigotry with, "typical white person" and "sweetie" to a woman reporter.

actually, guy, you sound like a typical white person

I'm female. I did not find that demeaning whatsoever.
But I suppose you can get the last minute stabs in now before Hillary runs out of time and delegates.

well...
To any of his defenders.

Notice when Obama said that dismissive remark, the MEN surrounding Obama automatically LAUGHED at her.

This was not just some 'cute' reference. This was a sexist remark to diminish the female reporter because he didn't like her question.

He did so in a misogynistic way.

Then when the media caught this...
...then Obama apologized.

not privileged...
I'm not up for a political debate, just giving my 2 cents that I was expecting something a bit more demeaning...blame it on my lack of self-esteem. I'm sure he has brushed off several other reporters female and male alike. I won't make any digs at Hillary, but she won't get my vote just because I'm female.

wow....can you say sore loser? why does anyone have some misconception that any potential president is perfect? You think because he said something like that he thinks women are lesser people? Is what he did really any worse then completely fabricating some war story? Its all so silly.
Stanley_Milgram Posted – 5/16/2008 11:21:44 AM | show profile
and how exactly do black men treat their women? care to elaborate?
astrahook Posted – 5/16/2008 12:48:51 PM | show profile
the irony is im no more an obama supporter then I am clinton. Its just ridiculous to dissect every aspect of what these people do or say. I mentioned Clinton's lie as an example, the reality is I could care less and that certainly woulnd't influence my vote. Rather then address that you just pose a larger more paranoid notion that clinton supporters are being rubbed out by the media. You are clearly missing the picture.

sell what? im not the one pitching paranoid theories. just accept that you lost and move on with your life

The problem is that the reporter was too slow in her response; she should have said: "sure honey", and everybody happy! Haha

Oh so now it is 'nothing'?
So dimissing a professional TV newsporter who just happens to be a women, is just a 'joke'?

The word "Sweetie" is not offensive, but when used in a dismissive condensing way it IS sexist.

An example; "boy" is not offensive, but when used in a dismissive condensing way is racist.

A professional news reporter should be treated with respect, UNLESS he knows her personal and has been working with her or knows her.

I have heard some people say to a black guy "You go boy", but if you are having a professional conversation and don't know the person you never call a black guy "boy", like you never call a professional woman you don't know "Sweetie" to dismiss her.

Could you imagine if a white politican said to black male reporter who didn't like a question "Hold up, boy, I'll get back to you"? No you wouldn't, because you would see that was racist.

Same thing.

Personally, I'd take the reporter off the campaign beat, for two reasons: She made herself the story instead of pursuing the answer she sought; and after her acidic "this sweetie," she won't be able to appear to provide impartial coverage.

On the rare occasions where someone I didn't know (men and women) on an intimate level called me sweetie, I was fuming mad.

This is very inappropriate to call someone other than a loved one.

Interesting Greatful Deadline. Does also include MSNBC's Keith Olbermann?

I can't draw a comparison between apples and oranges. Olbermann is a commentator. The TV news reporter is a reporter. Two different functions, like editorial page and news pages.
