| ywrite | Posted 5/19/2008 7:48:35 AM | show profile Does anyone have experience working with E, the Environment Magazine? What rights do they buy? I see nothing on their writers guidelines page ( http://www.emagazine.com/view/?1512 ) about rights or contract... |
| publish | Posted 5/22/2008 8:28:38 PM | show profile writing for E, the Environment Magazine If I were you, I'd pitch an idea and aske for rates in your query. I wrote an travel piece about the Cook Islands and they accepted it with few changes. I don't remember what I was paid, it wasn't great but I still use the clip. |
| Marie | Posted 5/23/2008 2:49:24 AM | show profile This isn't the kind of publication you write for to earn money -- you do it because you feel passsionate about your topic, kind of like writing for the Nation. And perhaps the clip carries some weight, although I don't know. |
| ywrite | Posted 5/23/2008 11:27:20 AM | show profile Thanks, Marie and Publish. You say this isn't the type of magazine you write for for money - but the big payers don't respond to my clips. You have to know someone to get in there and i just don't know anyone. I'm more concerned about rights / contract than the pay ... i don't want the piece all over the Internet without getting reimbursed for it... i wrote for Vibrant Life for a while on health topics - not much money either but some nice clips - however the articles are available on line and even on Amazon for a $5.95 download fee! Now I'm not getting anything from Amazon so what's the deal? When i inquired, i stopped getting assignments from them... but i had a contract and sold first rights so what is going on, and whey are these articles on the Internet, on doctor's web sites, and it says Copyright GALE Group? I never sold ANYTHING to Gale Group. What is GALE Group and how do they get my stuff? |
| womaninbooks | Posted 5/23/2008 12:51:31 PM | show profile Email a pitch and if they accept it, ask. You don't have to write if you don't like the rights ... frankly, I didn't like seeing my articles all over the web though the exposure that came with my E article was great enough that I now have people emailing me asking to write stuff for them. Not that that's common. But I'd stop worrying about rights and just ask them. |
| mamawriter | Posted 5/23/2008 5:30:35 PM | show profile | email poster I wrote an article for them on grass to gas, biofuels, about two years back and I haven't seen it everywhere. But if they do buy it, they do own the rights to it, so they could put it everywhere if they wanted to. Still, I have only great things to say about them and they were great to work for. |
