I am launching an online magazine later this year. We're talking now about hooking up with an Internet ad network -- i.e DoubleClick or Google's Ad Manager -- to help move some of our ad inventory. Has anyone had experience with such networks? Do they work? Do they generate revenue?

Of course they work. If you have a heavily trafficked site. If you are just starting out, your ad rates will be tiny until you build significant traffic.

Yes they work, but make sure to filter.
The key to getting most of these ad platforms to perform for you is to properly filter the ads to make sure they match the demographics of your content.

If the ads do not match your online magazine or your readers' intereset, it is the classical bad media buy.

But since you are technically the media buyer this time, instead of an outside agent, I highly suggest reading up on how to filter which ads get pushed to your site.
