Most of the work I do is for mags that run on a yearly cycle (in other words, pitch them Christmas ideas in the summer, etc.) So what do you do if you come up with, say, a great holiday-season idea...in November? (BTW, I'm just using holidays as an example here b/c I don't want to get super-specific a/b the nature of my pitch.) Do you send it along when you think of it and say something like, "Hey, I know this won't be on your radar for another 8 months...." or do you just file it, wait until the next time to pitch it rolls around and hope nobody beats you to the idea?

Thanks!

Consider weeklies or newspapers as a market, where the cycles are shorter and lead times are not as advanced. But be aware that newspapers, by and large, don't pay nearly as well as magazines for freelance articles.

Some magazines set up their editorial a year in advance, and usually do it in Dec or Jan. If that's the case for the mag you have in mind then you can pitch all features in Jan.
