Topic: When Writer's Weekly Doesn't Work

| joyeuxnoelle | Posted 6/6/2008 6:58:09 PM | show profile | email poster I'm in a position I never thought I'd be in. A pub I've had a good relationship with and have written for in the past is now crying broke and saying they can't honor our contract. They hope that they will have money to pay me in the fall, which I know isn't a guarantee. What's really got me burned up is that I've asked for a copy of my published story so I can use it as a clip and no one will respond. If they can't pay me is seems like they would be bend over backwards to be as accommodating as possible in other aspects. It turns out writer's weekly sent out a warning for them a few years back, though in this case the pub seemed to believe that payment was not due yet. Not my case. They've acknowledged they owe me money and that they do not plan to pay me when they are supposed to. I want to turn this over to writer's weekly, however I suspect the pub just won't respond - like they did with the case I just mentioned. So if that happens what do I do? |
| Astera | Posted 6/6/2008 7:31:12 PM | show profile If you have a signed contract stating a payment date, take the publisher to small claims court. Or, if you have any lawyer friends, ask one of them to write a strongly-worded letter. Sometimes, that's all it takes to encourage a publication to "find" the money it's claiming not to have. I would think that either of those options would have more teeth than a warning from Writer's Weekly. I've also heard that some writer's unions can help with payment disputes. ------ www.adventuresofastera.blogspot.com |
| write2rachel | Posted 6/6/2008 10:48:30 PM | show profile | email poster I have someone that won't respond either. The money is really low (I just did it for another clip), so I don't even care. I just wanted to say that I share your pain and think it's really cheesy that they won't even send you a copy. Keep emailing and calling... maybe call the front desk and ask that person to send you a copy. Sometimes they are more responsive. Good luck! |

| joyeuxnoelle | Posted 6/9/2008 2:46:26 AM | show profile I meant to mention that the pub's not available to the public so I can't just pick it up. |
