Any advice on how to find a fixer in Nairobi? And how much does a fixer typically charge?

Thanks!

What is a fixer? Sounds ominous, like a 'cleaner'. :)

A fixer is someone in the film world who helps a production team get permits, find locations, avoid trouble areas, navigate cultural issues etc. At least that's what I know a fixer to be. Are you looking for a fixer for an overseas production?

I can't help you, but it I've had this super swell idea to establish a website that connects journos with fixers. I'm just not sure how to go about doing it. I thought about petitioning journos to provide fixers they've used and starting a MySQL database, perhaps for a fee. I wonder if this would be useful to enough people, and if there was some way to actually make money though a site like that (so it's not a losing venture).

Mandy.com has various listings for people and companies in different regions. Also, try Doculink, a Yahoo group.

NGOs, universities or other journalists already on the ground (i.e. people from 'voice of nigeria' radio)

Thanks for the posts. I'll try the sites you mentioned.

For those who don't know what a fixer is, at least in the journalism world, it's a local journalist or aid who helps writers working in a foreign country with logistics (that can be anything from travel arrangements to story contacts).

"voice of america" not nigeria
Sorry... been working on an article about nigeria and I guess I had a slip.... I meant to say voice of america radio. you could also contact the other radio stations - deutsche welle and radio netherlands have good branches in nairobi, among others. i also recently went to a conference with a number of kenyan journalists and many of them are monitored by the kenyan human rights commission so you could contact the khrc to make sure the fixer you get is unbiased - especially if you're reporting on the political turmoil
