Though Colombia's AUC is officially categorized as a terrorist organization, and Chiquita has in the past paid AUC money to protect its interests in Colombia. Well, it turns out that the co-host of a recent top-dollar fundraiser for Sen. John McCain, Carl H. Lindner Jr., oversaw the payment of roughly $1.7 million to the Colombian paramilitary group. Some of you may not be aware that the AUC not only has done Colombia's counter-insurgency dirty work, but AUC members are notorious for "cleansing" policies in villages -- assassinating gay prostitutes where they stand, murdering labor organizers and anyone suspected of working with the FARC. They've also been found to be involved -- like the FARC -- in drug trafficking. The AUC is at least as bad as the FARC, enough that the Bush administration began urging the Urbide administration to do more to counter AUC's growing right-wing influence in the Colombian countryside. But considering that the AUC and the Colombian government both consider the FARC the enemy, human rights groups have said not enough has been done to crack down on the AUC's activities. This is not "in the past" like El Salvador or Guatemala of the 1980s. This is going on today -- though since 2001 the US has been increasing pressure on Urbide to crack down on the AUC. If McCain were serious about human rights in Colombia or Latin Ameirca as a whole he wouldn't be attending fundraisers with any executive involved with Chiquita banana or payments to terrorist organizations. |

Nobody is going to say anything about McCain using Linder to help raise money. Linder approved Chiquita payments to a group on Bush's own list of terrorist organizations. I'll keep this in mind each time some right-winger tries to make the Obama's connections to William Ayers a big deal. William Ayers gave Obama $200. Linder has given McCain thousands and helped him raise more money. He paid AUV rebels to stay away from Chiquita agricultural sweatshops in Colombia. The AUC is a murderous armed right-wing rebel organizations. Ayers is a professor at the University of Chicago. Big diff. |
