Course Details

It's not enough just to write good fiction -- although this class will certainly help you do that. In Writing and Reading Your Short Fiction, you'll get critical feedback on your short fiction, but you'll also learn how to take the extra steps to get your words published and heard. Whether you're a new writer or a published author who cringes at the thought of reading in public, this class will help you improve your presentational skills and bring your fiction into the world.

What's hot in the literary scene? Sharing your work with audiences! Spoken word events, bookstore readings, literary salons, book festivals, reading series? the Bay Area teems with opportunities for short fiction writers to gain exposure. In this class, you will read your work aloud, critique each other, and learn about the importance of a good live presentation in today's fiction world. You'll also learn tactics for publishing short fiction in magazines and online. The class culminates with a fun, public reading of your work.

Over the course of this class, you will:
  • Get feedback on your short fiction
  • Learn tactics for publishing short fiction in magazines and online
  • Improve your presentational skills
  • Leave with a powerful 10-minute fiction reading.
Admission Requirements:
Open to short fiction writers. Please let us know a bit about you, including a brief writing history, and provide a writing sample (less than 2000 words).
