Course Details

Magazine publishing and advertising is an extremely lucrative and growing field. This class will investigate every aspect of a successful magazine publishing career. We will explore what is needed to make a magazine succeed, and how magazines work from a business perspective. Throughout the class, students will create a concept for a magazine from editorial vision to desired demographic marketplace and circulation goals. Learn how to create buzz with effective marketing, promotion, and public relations. Learn how circulation numbers relate to building a subscription and newsstand base.

We will also cover the financial responsibilities of editorial and advertising to turn a profit within a business plan. We'll talk about creating an audience, media buy, and target consumer for agencies and clients. We will also look at ways to obtain new revenue streams through online, promotions, events, and strategic partnerships.

Richard Kinsler has worked in magazine publishing for over 30 years in ad sales, marketing, corporate, and publishing. He was publisher of Mademoiselle and New York magazine, and executive vice president/publisher of Playboy. Richard was also president of a media agency that worked on well known national brands and clients.
