Course Details

Do you wonder where integrity ends and the line into the unacceptable begins? Just because you can do and say things as a journalist, does that mean you should say and do these things? It's a wild world of journalism on the Internet, in alternative weeklies, and even in mainstream publications like the local newspaper you want to freelance for. But there are still rules and guidelines that most editors with ethics adhere to, and want you to know.

In this seminar, you will learn:

  • Why objectivity isn't necessarily the aim, but fairness is -- and how to achieve it
  • Who's fair game or target, and who isn't and why
  • How to obtain information ethically, and recognize when you're acting otherwise
  • How to gain access honestly
  • The rare times it's ok to conceal your identity
  • What words you can use: on the record, off the record, and information on background only
  • The rules of various writing outlets, and what they may require from you
