Online content is here to stay, but so are magazines. Not that long ago, putting a magazine online primarily meant uploading previously published articles, sometimes with images and a couple of links inserted. But those days are gone, as online audiences are demanding and fickle. In order to compete with online media, stay relevant and extend their brands and readerships (online and off), magazine sites are increasingly investing in new technology, the creation of Web-exclusive content, and integrating their print and online brands more creatively (think Lucky).

In this 6-week course we'll cover the essentials of creating successful magazine sites and what that means for print magazine writers and editors.

In this class, you will learn:

  • Skills you need succeed as a writer/editor for magazine Web sites, including where the role of editor ends and producer begins
  • How to Webify magazine articles, including pitfalls to avoid
  • Which new Web technologies have become an expected and integral part of Web content, and how to develop them
  • The importance of user-generated content -- when and how to encourage it, how and why to use it
  • How to evaluate, identify, and incorporate potential content partnerships

Admission Requirements:
Please submit a letter of interest (including a brief work history).

The online classroom has several interactive components:

  • Instructors post lectures once a week. You can read them online, print them, or download them at your convenience.
  • Students post completed assignments for feedback and discussion by the instructor and class.
  • Weekly chats allow your class to get together via instant message. Transcripts are available for review if you can't attend.
