"I do think that the quality which makes a man want to write and be read is essentially a desire for self-exposure and is masochistic. Like one of those guys who has a compulsion to take his thing out and show it on the street." - James Jones Thursday Aug 21, 2008

Happy HourFelling Goes Into The WildIt's farewell to Washington's most quoted unemployed person: Matthew Felling. The former CBS "Public Eye" writer has become an oft-quoted media analyst (Howie Kurtz is a big fan) ever since "Public Eye" went dark and let go of some of its writers. Felling is packing up his bags and heading to Alaska, Rachel Sklar reports, where he'll be the anchoring the 6 p.m. local newscast on local CBS affiliate KTVA in Anchorage, Alaska. How Not To Win Over ReportersSo, today, Sen. Barack Obama announced his "battleground state tour leading up to Democratic National Convention." The campaign put out the advisory at 5:52pm EST. The deadline for credentials? Just one hour later. (And reporters are on deadline!) Convention Reporters: Remainderskafanov's email

Tale of the Email Tape: Tubbs Jones...The AftermathAfter the back-and-forth yesterday, very few media outlets were willing to put out yet another breaking news alert (Twitter? That's a whole different story...) about the definitive -- and sad -- passing of Rep. Tubbs Jones:
Snyder on the WaPoFrom the WSJ's interview with Redskins owner Dan Snyder: WSJ: In June you bought a radio station, WTEM, which is a very popular local sports station. There's some concern among fans that it might become a propaganda tool for the Redskins. What do you say to that? Mr. Snyder: It's actually just the Washington Post. We have a problem in this marketplace with our local newspaper. There's a monopoly. I have no problems saying that. They have been losing circulation by the droves, losing advertising by the pound load and they are desperate to create controversy. They had a Washington Post radio business at the time -- it's since gone out of business -- that was a competitor. We did write them a letter saying obviously you're a competitor, so don't use your newspaper to affect the business. Other than them, you won't find any of that type of talk. [Note: Leonard Downie, Jr., The Washington Post's executive editor, denies that the Post's radio venture, which ended nearly a year ago, influenced the paper's coverage of the Redskins. "Our coverage is always independent of both outside interests … and independent of other businesses that the Washington Post owns," Mr. Downie said in a telephone interview. "Our readers expect that of us."] Hat tip: Romenesko Convention Reporters: National JournalWho you might see at the conventions: Alexis Simendinger, Alyssa Rosenberg, Amy Walter, Andrew Noyes, Ashley Johnson, Bara Vaida, , Bob Gettlin, Brian Friel, Bruce Stokes, Charlie Cook, Christopher Strohm, Corine Hegland, Dave Morris, David Hatch, David Morris, Erin McPike, Gregg Sangillo, Holly Noe, James Barnes, Jason Dick, Jennifer Skalka, Jill Smallen, Jim Barnes, John Maggs, John Mercurio, Joyce Murdoch, Julie Abramson, Keith White, Kevin Friedl, Kirk Victor, Lisa Caruso, Liz Lynch, Lou Peck, Margie Kriz, Marilyn Serafini, Maura O'Brien, Megan Scully, Monica Sullivan, Neil Munro, Nora McAlvanah, Patrick Pexton, Paul Starobin, Peter Bell, Peter Cohn, Peter Stone, Quinn McCord, Randy Barrett, Richard Cohen, Rick Bloom, Robert Somerville, Ron Brownstein, Shane Harris, Stephen Gettinger, Theresa Poulson, Tim Sahd, William Englund and Winter Casey.
