Job Description
The Dallas Morning News seeks a powerhouse reporter to cover the Dallas Cowboys for one of the country’s premier sports sections. The Cowboys beat is among the most significant and competitive at The News, with coverage of the world’s most valuable sports franchise consumed across the globe.
Closer to home, the Cowboys’ brand is a cultural cornerstone that impacts daily life for many North Texans. Jerry Jones, among the most powerful owners in professional sports, is a news driver for both on- and off-the-field content.
As Dallas-Fort Worth’s leading news source, The News expects its beat writers to deliver daily coverage that drives conversations for Cowboys fans (and haters) at office water coolers, on social media, and on sports talk radio.
The successful candidate must possess the reporting chops and tenacity to routinely break news, plus the curiosity to develop unique storylines for a variety of story formats from long-range enterprise and accountability journalism to quick-turn listicles. Top candidates will know how to find unique angles away from media scrums to ensure DMN subscribers get exclusive content. An understanding that the most interesting story of the day may have nothing to do with what happens on the field is a must.
The successful candidate must be a team player willing to share in the workload and the glory, as The News’ Cowboys beat includes a team of reporters, columnists, producers, and visual journalists.
The best candidates will have a distinct, polished writing style, strong reporting instincts, and three or more years of experience on a major professional beat. You must be able to communicate clearly, quickly, and accurately on deadline, while thriving in a competitive market.
Candidates should have a digital-first mindset — relying on available metrics and company priorities to inform coverage decisions — and experience working with data, open records, and breaking news. Candidates should embrace social media as a storytelling platform and engagement tool, driving conversation with a ravenous fanbase. Experience and interest in multimedia storytelling is preferred.
The ideal candidate will be expected to join The News’ coverage of marquee events during the NFL’s “slower” periods, such as the 2026 World Cup.
Applicants should submit a resume, cover letter, writing samples, examples of strong digital work, and coverage ideas for the beat.
Please contact deputy sports editor Damon Marx (dmarx@dallasnews.com) with any questions.
