The Bibb County School District is now accepting applications for Communications Officer.

Summary Description of Classification: Performs communications/dispatch work involving the receipt and transmission of radio and telephone messages for the school system police department. Performs clerical functions such as data entry, filing, operating a copy machine, send/receive emails, etc. Maintains and processes departmental files and GCIC/NCIC records. Monitors GCIC terminal, EPIC Mass Communication system, alarm and video surveillance equipment for BCSD properties on a continuous basis.

Minimum Qualification Standards

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:1. Obtains pertinent information from incoming calls for service in a prompt and courteous manner.2. Operates multi-channel base radio and monitors Police, Fire, EMS and the district's Transportation and School Radio channels.3. Dispatch and coordinate with mutual aid resources: Police, Fire, EMS, Animal Control and/or other emergency personnel for immediate response to routine calls, emergencies, etc.4. Utilizes an Automated Records Management System (ARMS) System to track, log and archive officers' activity and calls for services via telephone calls and radio communication.5. Monitor burglar alarms, fire alarms and system-wide notification system on continuous basis.6. Monitors, records, and downloads video footage on the district's video surveillance system.7. Utilizes the district's computer-based access control system to monitor employees; assist officers with opening and securing doors.8. Access to the Georgia Crime Information and National Crime Information Center (GCIC/NCIC) databases to assist police officers in the performance of their official duties; perform district's background checks for employment.9. Provides clerical support; data entry skills to enter arrest reports, trespass-warning notices, citations, and retrieve information from departmental files and presents reports to the proper courts.10. Maintains, sorts and files incident and accident reports alphabetically, numerically, chronologically and by other predetermined categories.11. Maintains composure, alertness and concentration while working for extended periods of time on shift work.12. Obeys and observes the policies, rules and procedures of the Campus Police Department, Criminal Justice Information System, and the Bibb County School District.13. Receives visitors, answer phones and gives information or refers customers to proper officials/personnel.14. Maintains a clean and efficient office.15. Performs job-related tasks other than those specifically described.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

1. Knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.2. Ability to type with speed and accuracy required.3. Ability to write/email routine correspondence and communicate effectively and tactfully.4. Ability to follow and successfully complete written and oral directions.5. Some knowledge of the school system geography and locations of buildings and facilities.6. Some knowledge of departmental rules, regulations, and procedures.7. Broad knowledge of ARMS Records Management Software program.8. Knowledge of landline telephone, cellphone, multi-channel radio and records management system.9. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively on the radio and telephone.10. Ability to act calmly, quickly, and correctly in emergency situations.11. Ability to answer calls and questions in a clear, well-modulated voice.

Education, Training and Experience:1. High School diploma or GED certificate is required.2. Some clerical office experience is desired.3. Prior experience and training in police dispatch is preferred.4. Customer service experience required.5. Keyboard/Type 30-40 wpm desired.

Certificate and License Requirements:1. Georgia P.O.S.T. Basic Communications Officer certification.2. CJIS Network Operator (GCIC/NCIC) certification3. Current and valid Georgia driver's license is required.

Special Requirements:1. An extensive background investigation, including an alcohol and drug screening conducted prior to employment.2. Random drug screenings will be conducted after employment.3. A keyboarding/typing proficiency test and skills assessment exam will be administered.

Working Conditions:1. Must be able to sit in a stationary area for an extended period of time.2. Must be willing to work rotating shifts, holidays, weekends and days/nights as needed.3. Must be able to work in a fast paced and highly stressful environment.4. Requires independent, quick thinking and the ability to maintain composure.

Physical Demands:

Tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).

Salary/Terms/Benefits:239 day contract year; 8 hours per daySalary Range: Grade 35 (placement on salary schedule based on years of related experience). Up to ten years allowed. The stated salary range reflects the opportunity for pay over the course of the employee's tenure.
