Temporary Data Graphics Developer

Business Insider Inc. is hiring a Contract Data Graphics Developer to join our editorial Graphics Team to focus on designing and developing data visualizations and interactive graphics for our newsroom’s biggest stories.
These projects could range from exclusive org charts of big banks and tech companies, deep dives into big data sets, and custom site design and development for feature packages. This is a temporary, part-time position.

The Role & Team:
The ideal candidate has proven experience working with reporters and editors across a newsroom to create high-quality visual stories and data visualizations. You will be expected to create fresh, compelling, and inspired graphics, while working within the established style guidelines of Insider.
Key Responsibilities:
Digital design and development experience, preferably in a newsroom
Experience designing and building data visualizations and interactive information graphics
Fluent in JavaScript (specifically D3), HTML, CSS/SCSS Expert use of Github
Experience with frameworks such as Svelte a plus Experience with cartography tools, such as QGIS and Mapbox a plus
Ability to use Python or R and the ability to analyze and clean large datasets a plus
Expert knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite
The Ideal Candidate:
Has knowledge of principles and standards of journalism
Has the ability to juggle multiple projects and work under deadlines
Is smart, bold, and responsive approach to design
Has the ability to think big and not always conform
Has the ability to thoughtfully communicate and make the complex, simple
Has strong organization and communication skills
Salary:
Hourly Rate: $30 - 45/hour, 16 hours a week for 2 months (dependent on skills, experience, and competencies)
