QualificationsEducation:

Bachelor or Masters (preferred) degree in an area relevant to coordinating and directing school/community relations such as public relations, mass communication, business/vocational education, or equivalent education and experience.Training or Experience Required:

Professional experience in development/oversight in collaborative school/community programming and two-way networking.Special Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:

Communication Skills (oral, written, or business): Basic communication skills to exchange information, give/receive instructions and respond to inquiries. Must be able to communicate in clear, grammatically correct English.Data Recording/Record Keeping: Performs data recording/record keeping operations, and determine what changes need to be made to existing records, including computerized records.Working knowledge of internal and external communication strategies.Proficiency with current technology for performance of duties; including graphics design and publication/print software.Working knowledge of websites and social media platforms.

Job Summary:

To coordinate a comprehensive two-way communication process involving both internal and external publics with the goal of stimulating a better understanding of the role, objectives, accomplishments and needs of the school district.

Contact with Others:

Handles duties with confidentiality, provides clear instructions, builds and maintains excellent rapport with district staff, professional dress; maintains proper attendance and leave procedures. Will have regular contact with district staff and students which requires tact and diplomacy and problem solving skills.

Performance Expectations:

Fosters good public relations between school division and public by explaining and interpreting objectives of the District. Requires following safety guidelines and policies, inclusive of the District Exposure Control Plan for Bloodborne Pathogens, to reduce accident or injury to self. It requires following school dress standards, proper attendance or leave policies, and other work-habits concerns.

Complies with Shawnee's Mission Statement in which students are to be provided with skills, knowledge and attitudes to become lifelong learners, complex thinkers, and responsible citizens in an ever changing global society.

Essential Job Functions (Performance Responsibilities):Communications

Assist the superintendent and BOE in assessing and interpreting public attitudesDevelop a comprehensive communications plan for the districtHandle all aspects of the school district's publications such as external and internal newsletters, brochures, bulletins, lettersPromote positive media relations and coveragePromote the district's strengths/achievements, and its solutions to problems.Vigorously publicize student, faculty, and staff achievements.

General Expectations

Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships.Interact tactfully and effectively with staff and the general public.Resolve problems, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure.Effectively communicate project expectations to team members and stakeholders in a timely and clear fashion.Evidence of strong analytical and critical thinking and judgment skills.Experience in planning, implementing, evaluating, budgeting, and personnel supervision.Perform other related duties as assigned.

Does not supervise other employees.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions:

Other than those physical/mental requirements included in the essential functions the employee must have the ability to communicate in person, and on the telephone. The employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Terms of Employment:

220 or 260 days annually; Salary in accordance with the negotiated agreement.

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Shawnee Board Policy on evaluation of personnel.
