Position Summary

The Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR) serves a wide spectrum of customers by providing technology leadership, solutions, and value to State of Texas government agencies, higher education, and local government entities of all sizes to facilitate the fulfillment of their core missions. When your publicly funded organization requires voice, data, wireless, video, or Internet services, DIR's Capitol Complex Telephone System (CCTS) unit makes procuring these services easy and cost-effective. DIR contracts with vendors to provide Telecom Services and since pricing is negotiated with the full volume buying power of the State of Texas, we're able to provide highly competitive rates and service levels.

This position performs complex telecommunications work to support the Capitol Complex Telephone System (CCTS). Work involves hands-on installation and maintenance of telecommunications equipment. Also involves performing a variety of specialized and technical duties in the maintenance of the Agency's telecommunications system. Work is performed under general supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience and aptitude for performing the following functions:

• Performs routine technical work in the control and/or operational installation of voice and data telecommunications equipment, including the resolution of telecommunications problems on the CCTS.

• Performs software system move, add and changes in the Cisco HCS environments.

• Hands on installation and maintenance of CCTS telephones and wiring; Receives, records, and monitors customer reports of trouble related to CCTS voice and data equipment; Analyze and trouble shoot hardware and software problems to resolve phone and/or voicemail performance issues.

• Installs and repairs digital, analog and VoIP system level equipment; Perform preventive maintenance checks on the Unified Communications VoIP platform; Participate in the ongoing implementation of the VoIP infrastructure.

• Schedule and prioritize work to accommodate customer needs while minimizing impact on current operations; Ensures adherence to and documentation of routine maintenance schedules; Perform after-hours maintenance and on-call duties.

• Maintains liaison with vendors and/or internal departments involved in the resolution of reported trouble and completion of service requests; Perform traffic studies using industry standards to maintain sufficient call paths while limiting excessive costs; Maintain inventory of spare parts and serialized billable equipment; Accurately process detailed customer work orders and ensure completion to customer satisfaction.

• Escalates to management of potential service level problems before they occur; Assist in evaluating and designing new telecommunications systems; May train other technicians; Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

• Two years of college or university accredited courses with major course Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or related field.

• Additional work-related experience may be substituted for college on a year-to-year basis.

Experience And Training

• Five (5) years progressively responsible telecommunications experience as an installation and/or PBX technician in a large environment.

• Three (3) years wage earning experience in a telecommunications customer service environment.

• Experience with large environments that include multiple building locations.

• Experience in working on large equipment installation and PBX projects.

Experience and Training Preferred

• Experience and knowledge of Cisco Unified Communications.

• Experience in VoIP technology.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Skilled in the use of telecommunications test equipment.

• Skilled in the use of personal computers and knowledge of database capabilities.

• Ability to work under pressure and exacting schedules to complete assigned tasks.

• Ability to work occasional overtime and/or a flexible schedule as needed to meet required deadlines.

• Ability to comply with all agency policy and applicable laws.

• Ability to comply with all applicable health and safety rules, regulations, and standards.

Computer Skills

• Proficiency in the use of a computer and applicable software necessary to perform work assignments e.g., word processing, spreadsheets (Microsoft Office preferred).
