JOB SUMMARY: The Library/Media Assistant works under the direction of the Media Specialist or Principal to provide support to the instructional program with specific responsibilities for maintaining the library collections at the school sites; identifying age-appropriate resources for students and teachers use; selecting and ordering grade/age appropriate literature and resources in support of classroom instruction; and performing clerical functions related to collection, processing materials, circulation and shelving of books and resources, maintenance, and overseeing the usage of the computer lab.

QUALIFICATIONS:Associate Degree or higher preferred or related experience.Possesses skills to perform multiple tasks within a library/media setting, and a desire to occasionally upgrade job skills in order to meet changing job requirements. Specific skill-based competencies are required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include operating standard office equipment; utilizing software application; conducting inventories of books and resources; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.Knowledge is required to perform basic mathematics, including calculations; some knowledge of children literature and periodicals, compose a variety of documents, facilitate group discussions; and understand multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include library practices; and computer and internet operations.Enjoys working with students in an educational setting; ability to read children literature to a class or group of students; assists students with finding age-appropriate books or resources within the library/media center; assists students with computer usage and ability to work in a supportive role with staff.Some problem-solving may be required to identify issues and initiate a plan of action. Problem-solving with data may require independent interpretation, and problem-solving with equipment is limited to moderate.The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, walking, sitting, standing, and significant fine finger dexterity. This job is performed in a generally clean, organized and healthy environment.Health examination for new employees part-time or full-time:Chapter 122 Article 24-5 of Illinois School Code mandates that School boards shall require of new employees evidence of physical fitness to perform duties assigned and freedom from communicable disease, including tuberculosis. Such evidence shall consist of a physical examination and a tuberculin test and, if appropriate, an x-ray. The cost of such examination shall rest with the employee.Must pass a comprehensive drug screening.Must pass a comprehensive criminal background check.Demonstrates the ability to lift 50 pounds.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Demonstrates knowledge of current technology hardware and software as well as audiovisual equipment and other media equipment.Demonstrates effective problem-solving, communication, organizational, record-keeping, and interpersonal skills.Coordinates skills to maintain databases, file catalogs, and maintain systems for checking out books and tracking books and resources.Demonstrates skills to interpret policies regarding copyright laws for media.Possesses effective verbal and written communication skills.Demonstrates the ability to troubleshoot hardware and software issues. Assists Media Specialist with scheduling.Demonstrates the ability to schedule activities and/or meetings; gathers and/or collates data; and uses job-related equipment.Assists teachers, students, and administrators for the purpose of identifying resource materials for use in classroom and/or class assignments.Assists in maintaining materials inventory (e.g. library books, periodicals, library hardware/software equipment, related instructional materials, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of books and library materials/resources.Collaborates with classroom teachers for the purpose of providing resources and/or novels, etc., to enrich learning activities.Maintains a clean, safe, and pleasant work environment for the purpose of providing students a greater opportunity to achieve.Monitors and maintains the school technology integration system for the purpose of maintaining the inventory of books, resources, school-wide audio/visual equipment, and one-to-one student devices, promoting digital citizenship and appropriate use of technology.Operates a variety of media production equipment and systems to support media production services.Orders supplies, literary books, periodicals and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability of current information.Participates in collegial meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. to grow professionally.Performs circulation activities (e.g. item check-in and check-out, prepare circulation count, lists of overdue items) for the purpose of controlling the use, location, and availability of items in the collection.Prepares a manual and electronic documents and reports (e.g. collection statistics, schedulingreports/requests, renewal information, overdue lists, textbook orders, fines, costs, etc.) for the purpose of providing documentation and requested information.Processes library books, periodicals, software, and related media materials (e.g. logging into master files; barcoding, shelving, producing required reports, etc.) for the purpose of providing students and staff with required/requested materials.Recommends books and periodicals for retention within the collection (e.g. retirement of books and/or periodicals, etc.) to ensure current resources and materials.Repairs or discards and replaces damaged books and periodicals.Responds to inquiries from students, staff, and parents regarding the availability of books, finding appropriate reference documents, status of overdue fines, and notification of fees owed for lost and damaged books.Supervises students activities in library and multimedia areas to maintain an environment conducive to learning.Acts in the absence of the Media Specialist during that person's absence. Notifies the Principal if needs assistance in addressing situations.Performs clerical work. Serves as media center receptionist; answers phones, sorts mail, types and files material, copies and laminates material; prepares library banners, labels, and signs; prepares purchase orders; orders library supplies; performs minor office and library equipment repairs; and tags, prepares to send equipment for repair.Calls upon the technology department if technical assistance is needed.Performs other duties assigned by the Building Principal or Media Specialist.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Confidential, 10-month position.

EVALUATION: Annually evaluated by the Building Principal and Media Specialist.
