As a Design Lead of the Design System team creating the future of our Northern Trust Design System, you will govern and design systems to amplify Northern Trust designers' work for digital product experiences. Ideal candidates will lead with curiosity and empathy, driving change through contribution and communication. The Design System team is part of our Design Enablement practice in the Experience Design and Research department.

Design Leads tactically and strategically contribute to design at varying stages of discovery, development, and delivery in collaboration with peers and stakeholders. They can work independently and collaborate with their peers and counterparts in business and technology teams. They are responsible for the delivery of specific features or processes within a product or capability team and take accountability for execution and experience outcomes with manageable risks and resource requirements. May lead features or project steps within a broader project or may have accountability for on-going activities or objectives with manageable risks. Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience.

Major DutiesWorks to improve Northern Trust Design System user experiences through individual contribution and collaboration with Experience Design and Research team members as well as technology, business, and product partnersCreate beautiful, accessible, well-documented design system patterns and templates from ideation of new components in Figma to verifying the design intent of a released component in StorybookGuides design to meet objectives and outcomes, influences business and technology decisions with user needs in mindContributes to an open culture that enables employees' development through direct but kind feedback, promotes diverse perspectives and fosters a sense of curiosity and optimismProvides creative direction and conducts design reviews, balancing design decisions between research, technology, and business unit objectivesSolves experience problems and takes new perspectives on existing solutionsExercises judgment based on the analysis of multiple sources of informationWorks within broad guidelines and policiesMay collaborate in an agile environment or ad hoc in emerging experience projectsGuides designers and researchers relative to the current project or digital productKnowledge

Ability to utilize Human-Centered Design and Interaction Design best practices to solve product and service experience problems within a professional setting, as demonstrated in a portfolio of work with an emphasis on design systems and improving the accessibility of digital productsHigh proficiency with Figma, including familiarity with branching, components, variables, variants, and modes while creating, maintaining, and planning workAware of the possibilities and constraints of technology, including frontend web development, responsive design, module federation, inclusive technology, design tokens, token synchronization, mobile and web interaction design patternsProficiency in a range of relevant design methods and concepts, which may include low-fidelity sketching, information architecture, wireframe development, usability testing, research planning, competitive analysisStrong design skills in multiple competency areas (visual, interaction, information architecture, product)Presents work and decisions effectively, through presentation and storytelling skillsRecognizes patterns to predict, curate and incorporate use cases and user interactions into design system solutions for multiple productsHighly flexible, adaptable to change and comfortable with ambiguity and critiqueEffective use of collaborative/communication tools when sharing design intent and encouraging efficient designer to developer collaborationClear growth mindset, looking for opportunities to learn and motivated to approach challenges proactively#LI-GG1#LI-HybridExperience

Seven years demonstrated work experience delivering digital experiences including three or more years of design system workEducated in design or related field, formally or through comparable trainingExperience working with a cross-functional team or large-scale software development lifecycle, preferably in an agile environment, is desiredCreating and implementing accessible, inclusive (WCAG 2.2 AA) designsPast experience in graphic design, motion graphics, digital art, typography, color, layout, and a general awareness of materials/textures
