Broadcast Chief Engineer

WVTM, the NBC affiliate in Birmingham, Alabama “The Magic City” has an opening for a Chief Engineer. In this leadership role, you will lead a team and demonstrate the ability to organize, plan, manage, document and complete assignments within a live broadcast environment. You will work in collaboration with the other department heads and directly oversee the daily operation of the station. We are looking for someone with experience in broadcast excellence and teamwork, with a passion for serving the local community, who is ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities of our ongoing evolving industry. The ideal candidate must excel in motivating and working with a high-energy team, enthusiastic in collaborating with all departments, focused on the future of our industry and how to adapt. Candidate should demonstrate success in budgeting, capital planning and personnel management. This position reports directly to the General Manager and serves on the station’s Department Head Team.  

Responsibilities

  • Manage and schedule technical and operational staff 
  • Oversee all studio and field equipment; equipment that provides the content of our broadcast on-air program streams
  • Manage the daily operation of the station, including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
  • Monitor multiple air channels, maintaining regulatory compliance, and assuring quality control of on air product
  • Budgeting and Capital Planning
  • Effort support and repair of all studio and field equipment
  • Oversee IT integrity and infrastructure
  • Maintain transmitter, satellite antenna systems, automation, signal distribution and routing systems.
  • Exhibit working knowledge of television maintenance, FCC requirements and licensing, and OSHA guidelines
  • Oversee all building maintenance and upkeep items working in consultation with Assistant Chief Engineer and IT Manager

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in broadcast operations
  • 3+ years of management experience
  • FCC General Class License, SBE Certified or related military experience will be considered
