The managing editor ensures the quantity and depth of the center’s news report. The managing editor works closely with the center director to oversee teams of media professionals and teams of student journalists, ranging from high school age to seniors in college.Primary Duties and Responsibilities+ Oversee day-to-day operations of the center’s journalism production, ensuring timely and high-quality content delivery.+ Collaborates closely with the center director to implement and advance the center’s strategic plan, aligning editorial efforts with overarching objectives.+ Collaborates closely with the center’s community liaison to ensure effective communication and coordination. Works closely with the center’s administrative lead to streamline administrative processes and support overall center operations.+ Serves as the day-to-day point of contact for inquires for inquiries from the public. Acts as the primary contact for news outlets and external stakeholders.+ Assumes the role of primary editor for all content produced by the center, ensuring editorial excellence and adherence to established guidelines.+ Contributes to the establishment of quality standards across all platforms and diligently enforces these standards to maintain consistency and professionalism.+ Leads and manages teams of media professionals and student journalists. Provides guidance, mentorship, and support to enhance team performance and productivity.+ Serves as the practicum instructor of record, overseeing and guiding students in practical journalism experiences. Possibly instructs at least one course per academic year, as assigned by the school director, contributing to the academic mission of the center.+ Performs other duties as assigned by the board or school director.Minimum QualificationsBachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in media or related field. At least five years’ experience in professional media, with rising levels of responsibility.Knowledge, Skills & Abilities+ Ability to effectively lead teams with a wide variety of backgrounds, experiences and skill sets.+ Ability to understand and implement all appropriate university and board-established center policies.+ Ability to assimilate large amounts of data quickly and accurately.+ Ability to communicate effectively with those from a wide range of backgrounds, education levels and varying skills.+ Ability to effectively deal with the public and establish long-standing relationships with key stakeholders.+ Ability to establish and meet professional journalistic standards, such as deadlines, adequate sourcing, ethical and considerations, language and production, and other measures as established by the board.+ Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite photo, video and graphics software.Preferred QualificationsMaster’s degree from an accredited college or university in mass communication or related field and at least five years media management experience.About The University of Southern MississippiSince our founding in 1910, The University of Southern Mississippi has remained dedicated to preparing students for success.
