Responsibilities

The grant writer provides editorial assistance to faculty in the development of research and training grants and manuscripts through consultation (before proposal is begun or as work is in progress) and serves as a member of mock grant-review teams. The grant writer edits and proofreads text of grants, manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, and other material. The grant writer will research a variety of topics and information for faculty and create/write sections (as templates or for single use) and online resources that support the proposal and submission. The grant writer will consult with faculty to provide technical advice in the area of proposal presentation and dissemination of information that can be used in the grant proposal revision process. The grant writer will also inform faculty and staff of upcoming government, corporate, and foundation grants; conferences; fellowships/scholarships; reports; new journals; and other relevant information and identify, research, and disseminate to individual faculty members lists of potential funding sources, journal possibilities for their articles, and information (e.g., news items) specific to their research and teaching interests.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or related field. Master’s degree preferred. Three years of grant writing experience in the federal and foundation fields and 5 years of editing, journalism, technical writing, communication, marketing public relations, or medical writing experience required. Advanced writing skills and the ability to write clear, structured, and persuasive proposals and manuscripts in addition to advanced verbal skills, critical thinking and active listening skills are preferred. The grant writer should have the ability to work in a complex scientific environment with multi-dimensional points of view, the experience synthesizing complex information from a variety of sources, and ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects concurrently.
