Job Title:Communications Specialist I Paramedic - Med Com

Job Summary:To facilitate patient flow, transfers, admissions, and consults for emergency department patients. To initiate air medical and/or ground transport and reception of ems transmissions as appropriate. To facilitate pre-hospital requests during a crisis or disaster mode. To provide optimum critical/emergency care to sick or injured patients transported by aircraft or other vehicle to UMMC or other designated facilities.

Education & Experience

EMT or EMD - High school diploma/GED and one (1) year experience performing ems duties or medical dispatching. Paramedic required.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:

National Registered Paramedic required

MS Paramedic required. NIMS 100, 200, 700 and 800 required within six (6) months of hire.

BLS, ACLS and PALS required. NRP required within 6 months of hire date. NAACS preferred. Valid Mississippi State Department of Health/Bureau of Emergency Medical Services Jurisdictional Medical Control on file for UMMC Emergency Services will be obtained within one month.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and practices of emergency management and disaster response. Knowledge of agents, equipment, procedures, and techniques for the provision of disaster, transport and out-of-hospital care. Ability to remain calm in emergency conditions. Ability to provide physical and psychological treatment and comfort to patients. Ability to withstand exposure to noise, external weather conditions, and work in high altitudes. Ability to maintain and comply with weight and lifting restrictions and requirements. Ability to respond and travel on short notice to remote site(s) as required.

Responsibilities

Utilizes the medcom communication and documentation systems and protocols to receive and document radio transmissions, phone calls, and other digital or electronic means of communication for emergency patient transfers or consultation calls or requests for assistance from pre-hospital providers and law enforcement personnel. Receives and conveys complete and accurate verbal and written messages. In reference to emergent transfer requests, patient reports, and medical control calls.Participates in educational and outreach activities and coordinates emergency preparedness efforts for internal and external customers with local, state, regional and federal partners.Assists with communication responsibility in accordance with the state of Mississippi comprehensive emergency management plan.Evaluates, plans, provides, and documents care for patients in the disaster, transport in or out of hospital environment.Performs daily operational duties of the disaster management plan as assigned, including but not limited to radio checks and management of incoming alerts. Assists with dissemination of disaster preparedness information and management as directed by the UMMC Mississippi center of emergency services leadership.Participates in disaster drills and exercises utilizing computer based systems, weather systems and communication systems.Follows specialty service and clinical department protocols in referring patients to UMMC.Maintains and verifies the quality and accuracy of all communications center related transport documentation.Receives, coordinates, and relays requests for medical transport by the comprehensive transport program. Performs continuous vehicle or aircraft following (computerized and/or manual mapping skills) and initiates emergency action plans in case of an incident/accident.The duties listed are general in nature and are examples of the duties and responsibilities performed and are not meant to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Physical and Environmental DemandsRequires frequent exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, constant exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, constant working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, constant activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, frequent bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, constant crouching/stooping, frequent kneeling, frequent pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, constant sitting, frequent standing, frequent twisting, and frequent walking.
