The primary function of this position is to support direct services to youth patrons with a focus on youth literacy initiatives, including the Library's tutoring program, Homework Hub. The person in this position identifies early and K-12 literacy needs based on data, and proposes and initiates, services and programs related to these needs. The Library Special Services Coordinator (Youth Literacy) recruits volunteer tutors and matches them with students. Work involves assisting library users in selecting and borrowing materials, handling customer service issues, and other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Provide Collection Access Guidance and Information Service. Provide patron assistance in using the online catalog, placing hold requests, and other online library account features. Assist patrons in locating library materials and offer alternative services when item is not found (hold request, purchase request, and Interlibrary Loan). Assist patrons with answers to informational questions in person, by telephone and electronically. Refers more complex questions to Information Professional or Supervisor. Performs collection maintenance activities such as collection promoting displays; deselecting outdated, non-circulating and damaged materials from the collection and processing them to be removed from the library's database. Other duties as assigned.

Provides assistance with public access computers and other technology. Assist and provide instruction to patrons in the use of personal computers, software applications, printers, public access computers, and downloadable materials. Make sure computers are clean and functioning properly. Troubleshoot and resolve hardware and software problems as they occur and/or instruct patrons so that they can resolve their own problems. Communicate issues with TSC as needed. Schedule use of presentation equipment, laptops and peripheral equipment; instruct patrons and staff in proper use of equipment and maintain equipment. Maintains current awareness of and familiarity with new software programs, electronic resources, computer equipment and downloadable media through training, webinars, workshops, tutorials, etc.

Supports Youth Literacy efforts. Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services related to youth literacy including workshops and programs. Assists with identifying funding opportunities and works with the Library’s Grants and Contracts Specialist to secure funding related to youth literacy services and programs. Works with a team to build to build and maintain partnerships with local organizations supporting youth literacy. Facilitates the Library’s Homework Hub program, which involves recruiting, retaining, and providing support to tutor volunteers, overseeing student applications, communicating with caregivers, connecting tutors with students, and managing the statistics for the program. Makes recommendations for the addition of print and digital youth literacy materials for the Library’s Collection.

Programming and community outreach. Plan, market and implement an array of programs for children, teens, families and/or adults. These programs will support the library’s four focus areas: Literacy and Lifelong Learning; Business & Workforce Development; Civic & Community Engagement; Arts & Humanities. Provide computer training and assistance to the public and staff, one-on-one or in groups, on the use of electronic resources (including but not limited to, SIRSI online catalog, library databases, and the Internet). Provide community outreach services through presentations promoting literacy and library use. Conduct library presentations and tours.

Engage in professional development. Participates in at least two professional development activities or workshops. Participates in other professional development activities as required by Library or Leon County BOCC.

Participates in program and agency meetings, as required or requested. Perform additional tasks as assigned by supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSThis position requires a bachelor's degree or six years of job-related experience.
