To assist the librarian in the daily activities of the school library; assists students and teachers in locating library materials; and assists with filing or various clerical duties.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Receives direct and immediate supervision from a Librarian or assigned Principal.

Essential Function Statements -

Essential duties may include, but not limited to, the following:

Performs routine descriptive cataloging such as fiction and children's literature.Operates the circulation desk as assigned; locates and delivers materials.Writes notices concerning overdue books; maintains records of lost books; and maintains library inventory records.Files cards in catalog drawers according to system used; shelves and reshelves materials; and assists in maintaining the neatness of the library.Answers routine inquiries and refers persons requiring professional assistance to Librarian; assists students and teachers in locating materials.Types and processes orders, reports, bibliographies; makes simple repairs of books and materials.Verifies bibliographic information on order requests.Assists the librarian or principal in preparing book orders, library supply requisitions, magazine requisitions, etc.Assists librarian in maintaining student discipline; assists in maintaining displays.Performs related duties as assigned and required.Present story hour to primary grades and use a variety of media to supplement story time.Performs general clerical duties as needed including filing, answering telephones and photocopying.

Qualification Requirements

Knowledge of:

Basic clerical procedures, methods, and computer equipment.Principles and procedures of filing.Modern office procedures.Basic record keeping.

Ability to:

Perform general clerical work including maintaining files.Respond to requests and inquiries from vendors, students, and school employees.Act as a receptionist.Type and enter data into the computer at a speed necessary for successful job performance.Operate standard office machines including a computer.Understand and follow oral and written instructions.Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.Maintain mental capacity which allows for effective interaction and communication with others.Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties.

Experience and Training GuidelinesAny combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Two years of general clerical experience.Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade - High School Diploma or GED Equivalency.

Licensure: Possession of, ability to obtain an Level III Educational Assistant license from the New Mexico Public Education Department.

Working Conditions

Environmental Conditions:

Quite office/classroom environment; works with computers; maintains same work schedule as teachers, or on a schedule established by supervisor.

Physical Conditions:

Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for moderate to heavy lifting and standing and walking for long periods of time.
