Powerhouse Arts is a not-for-profit organization committed to creative expression. Housed in a purpose-built-facility in Brooklyn, the organization hosts an extended network of art and fabrication professionals and educators who work together to co-create and share artistic practices vital to the well-being of artists and the communities to which they serve. Our new facilities house fabrication services, production services, production spaces, and member workshops for artisans.

The Ceramic Studio Manager reports to the Ceramic Studio Director and will participate in all aspects of community studio management and fabrication. The ceramic studio manager plays a crucial role in maintaining the studio's daily operations, program development, and culture.

Areas of responsibility will include:

Community Ceramic Studio

Manage a team of ceramic studio techniciansHold recurring 1:1 meetings with techniciansTrain existing and new staff in new processes, administrative work, member services, and fabrication techniques as neededScheduling - organize coverage for time off requestsUpdate colleagues with goals and tasksAssist in collaborating with the technology department as it relates to membership and fabricationAssist in planning AIR and Fellowship ProgramMaintain and improve studio maintenance schedule to keep up with changesWork with the Ceramic Studio Director to develop and implement workshop capabilities, operations, and protocolsMember services - provide members with assistance and service, including answering all queries, distributing materials, assistance with the firing process, and all issues as they relate to artist membershipAssist in planning and executing specialty workshopsCreate accessible, accurate, user-friendly signage and instructions for various processes and equipmentConduct orientations and training for membersMonitor and educate members on health and safety best practicesTrack and maintain inventoryLoad and monitor kilnsMix glaze and clayRecycle materials such as clay, slip, and glazeAssist in equipment maintenance and repairCollaboratively clean the studio dailyOccasional work required outside of regularly scheduled hoursFabrication

Under the direction of the Ceramic Studio Director, execute fabrication projects on schedule and within budget to the best of our abilityResearch and develop innovative fabrication techniques and methodsCollaborate with other staff, shops, and departments on projects as needed DevelopmentWork with the Ceramic Studio Director to identify and invite ceramic artists to collaborate with Powerhouse Arts, such as fabrication, workshops, talks, etc.Explore partnerships with ceramic studios in the tri-state areaWork with the Ceramic Studio Director to identify projects and collaborations with new clients-- including individual artists, institutions, and galleriesWork with external partners who have complementary fabrication expertiseParticipate in Powerhouse Arts events and shop tours as neededOccasional work required outside of regularly scheduled hoursQualifications:

6+ years' experience or the equivalent in ceramic studio operationsAttention to detail, excellent organizational skills, ability to problem-solveAbility to prioritize shifting needs of a busy membership and fabrication studioDesire to work within a community studio settingWillingness to share knowledge and serve a robust community of artistsPersonnel managementSchedule managementKnowledge of best practices in health and safetyBasic understanding of kiln repairGlaze formulation, testing, and mixingMaterials recycling--clay, slip, glaze, etcBasic handy skills for studio maintenance and upgradesProficient in one or more of the following: mold making, slip casting, wheel throwing, or hand buildingFluency in G SuiteAreas of interest but not mandatory

Realistic/ figurative sculpting skills3D printing in clay or other mediumsDigital fabrication, CNC machiningAbility to work in CAD programsAbility to work with PS and ID

Compensation & Benefits: Salary range is $70 - $75K, commensurate with experience.
