Job Description:

Summary:

The Music Therapist is responsible for managing and implementing a Music Therapy program for residents in the skilled-nursing, memory care, and assisted living areas. The Music Therapist upholds the philosophy, vision, and core values of the organization and ensures the Christian Mission of Lutheran Senior Services is realized so that "Older Adults Live Life to the Fullest."

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Plan, organize, and implement goal-focused music therapy sessions for individuals and groups with varying abilities and needs

2) Educate staff, family members, and caregivers on benefits of music therapy services offered and provide updates on resident involvement in music therapy when appropriate

3) Create sessions that address widespread goals of residents, including: social, emotional, physical, cognitive, spiritual, and behavioral
  • These may include music groups, therapeutic music education, song/lyric discussion, instrument playing, guided music relaxation, music and movement, Drums Alive, etc.
4) Complete assessments of one-on-one referrals, establish appropriate treatment plan for residents' individualized goals, and maintain required documentation of resident engagement in music therapy Coordinate with Director of Lifestyle Enrichment to meet objectives of music therapy program

5) Coordinate with Director of Lifestyle Enrichment ot meet objective es of music therapy program

6) Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams such as Lifestyle Enrichment, Social Work, and Nursing to determine appropriate referrals and increase awareness of music therapy within community

7) Provide educational in-services for staff to promote understanding of music therapy Maintain, store, and organize all music therapy equipment and materials

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in music therapy
  • Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC)
  • Knowledge of the physical and cognitive needs of older adults
  • CPR Certified

The employee may help with moving residents in wheelchairs, setting up tables and chairs and other supplies and equipment used for activities; Employee lifts up to 40 lbs on an occasional basis; Employee pushes and pulls a maximum force of 30 lbs.

Working Environment:

The work environment is well-lighted and ventilated; Employees may be subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including TB and the Aids and Hepatitis B viruses; Employees may be subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, etc. Employees may work beyond normal working hours when necessary, including evenings and weekends.
