JOB SUMMARY Under the general direction of the Director of Library Services, the Library Clerk will provide quality programs, activities, and assistance to customers. SUPERVISION RECEIVES direct supervision from the Director of Library Services. EXERCISES no supervision. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Process Books and Materials Process book and non-book materials and prepare them to be shelved. Update basic cataloging as needed. Maintain orderly shelves and read shelves periodically. Assist in maintaining online catalog. Inspects returned books for damage and makes minor repairs to book covers, spines, and labels. Repairs, cleans, and evaluates condition of books and removes damaged books and materials from general circulation. Create displays to highlight book collections or services. Check Out and Receive Books Issue replacement library cards. Check out books and other library materials. Take in returned books and return to shelves. Collect fines for damaged and/or lost materials. Provide Assistance to Patrons Provide high level of customer service to the public. Direct those with reference questions to books or online resources pertinent to the subject requested. Assist patrons with book returns and checkouts and completing Library card application. Instruct the public in the use of Library resources. Assist patrons in utilizing computers. Assist and back up other areas of the Library as assigned. Keep record of reserve requests and notify patrons when material requested is available. Process inter-library loans requests for patrons and other libraries. General Clerical Duties Perform general clerical work such as typing, filing, copying, etc. Under supervision, enter pertinent library records in the computer. Other Duties Attend Partners Library Action Network (PLAN) meetings and workshops. Participate in Texas State Library and PLAN programs and activities. Perform related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education, Training and Experience Guidelines: A High School diploma or equivalent is required, and six (6) months clerical experience; or equivalent combination or education and experience. Knowledge of: Customer service methods and techniques. Library classification and reference systems. Library automation and information retrieval systems. Library shelving procedures. Methods, policies, practices, principles, and procedures of professional library work. Record keeping, library reporting principles, and record retention regulations. Use of the English language, including spelling, grammar and punctuation. Basic computer applications, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook). Skills and Abilities: Effective oral and written communication. Resolving customer complaints and concerns. Meet the physical requirements necessary to perform the assigned duties safely and effectively. Represent the public image of the City of Belton in a positive manner. Work with young children, teens, adults, and senior citizens with patience and understanding. Exercise judgment and utilize discretion with tact. Establish and maintain effective working relationships. Be punctual and regular in attendance. LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS None PHYSICAL DEMANDS / ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND CONDITIONS Work is performed in a public library environment. May be subject to repetitive motion, such as data entry and vision to monitor. May be subject to frequent bending to floor level, reaching, kneeling, and lifting, such as retrieving or replacing books and materials. May be subject to working extended hours, nights, and weekends. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and push up to 75 pounds. Requires standing, bending, squatting, and sitting.
