Job Summary

Under the supervision of the assigned service area librarian, sorts and shelves library materials and maintains the order of the Library Department's collections, supporting the goal of excellent customer service by ensuring that materials are accurately shelved for ease of location by customers. Responsibilities include checking in and weeding periodicals, assisting with basic Access Services functions, and helping with set up and take down for Library programs and fundraising events.Examples of Duties• Sorts materials alphabetically and numerically for shelving. Assists in the provision of excellent customer service by accurately shelving library materials, maintaining order of collections, marketing library materials, and shifting collections when necessary. Routinely inspects areas of the collection to verify items are in order, to identify worn and damaged items, and to search for missing or reserved items.• Maintains the Library Department's periodical collection, including creating records for new periodical titles and assisting with weeding periodical collection.• Assists with acquisition, storage, and distribution of donated items.• Under the direction of a librarian, pulls items from generated weeding lists and deletes items from the catalog; inputs data in evidence-based stock management software; processes library materials for circulation.• Picks up stray materials and shelves them; straightens tables, chairs, displays, and materials on shelves. Performs minor custodial functions in keeping public areas neat and clean.• Assists with Library programming, classes, and fundraising events, including set up, clean up, and program supervision.• Communicates effectively, courteously, and tactfully in English with customers, staff, and volunteers in person, in writing, via email, by phone, and over the PA system; responds to customer inquiries, answering basic technical and directional questions and referring customers to appropriate Library staff or service desks for assistance.• Ability to comply with Library policies and procedures. Ability to maintain confidentiality in accordance with Library Department policies and State regulations regarding confidentiality of library records.• Inspects returned materials for damage and uses the Library's automation software to verify returned materials have been checked in. May assist with other basic circulation functions under supervision of Access Services staff as needed.• Sits working at computer for extended periods of time. Uses mouse and keyboard. Reads computer screens. Requires repetitive lifting/movement of library materials. Requires ability to walk around and stand for extended periods of time. Retrieves books and materials from and places them on shelves up to 7 ft. high with the aid of step stools. Lifts and carries materials and equipment up to 50 pounds. Pushes and pulls book carts than can weigh over 150 pounds when fully loaded. Must be able to kneel, stand, bend, stoop, stretch, climb, and work in confined spaces. Some exposure to dust, odors, and mechanical and electrical hazards.• Works flexible hours, including weekends and evenings.• May be required to perform other Library Department duties as assigned.Typical Qualifications

Ability to read and match numbers, to alphabetize, and to learn to work with the Dewey Decimal Classification System. General knowledge of public library operations. Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment. Ability to work accurately with an automated library system. Ability to work with minimal supervision. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.Education and Experience

Completion of ninth grade. Must be 16 years or older.
