Institute for Exceptional Care (IEC, www.ie-care.org) is a national nonprofit committed to making healthcare better for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD). IEC works to change, at scale, how healthcare is taught, delivered, and paid for, to improve the wellbeing of people with IDD (conditions such as autism or Down syndrome). As nationally recognized healthcare leaders who also have personal connections to IDD, we foster collaborations between the disability and healthcare communities to create solutions that are effective, efficient, and centered on the priorities and perspectives of people with disabilities.We are an ambitious and dynamic organization with partners spanning state and federal government agencies, academic medical centers, major health insurance companies, disability advocacy and service groups, national clinical organizations, and hundreds of people with IDD and their caregivers. We are seeking a versatile Communications Manager with a broad skill set to further grow our national presence and elevate our work to improve healthcare. This is a fully remote position.ResponsibilitiesThis is an exciting and rewarding opportunity to address health disparities among people with IDD by:Providing strategic communications counsel, support, and leadership to team and partnersBuilding and implementing communications and marketing campaigns and strategiesExecuting and adjusting a comprehensive communications plan drafted by an outside consulting agencyServing as the organization’s brand steward, ensuring the use of consistent messaging and visual identity standards in all collateralCreating content by drafting, vetting, and editing materials such as newsletters/email campaigns, website content, presentations, webinars, social media posts, grant applications, talking points, op-eds, press releases, and morePartnering with staff, advisors, and self-advocates to tell the stories coming out of IEC’s projects through written content and media relations effortsCreating compelling graphics and other visuals to bring content to life in external materials such as presentations, fact sheets, and digital channelsSupporting communications components of development team activities, including events, donor-specific materials, and end-of-year fundraising effortsManaging external vendors to build online learning community websites and design annual reportMonitoring and reporting on activity and metrics, using data to provide constructive guidance to better engage audiencesWorking on rapid response efforts and special projects as neededThe Communications Manager will report to the COO and will work closely with the Director of Development and the rest of the IEC team.QualificationsThe successful candidate should have:A passion for our missionA bachelor’s degree5+ years of relevant communications/marketing experienceExperience working in the healthcare sector (highly preferred)Excellent verbal and written communication skillsUnderstanding of accessibility best practices, including plain language writing and WCAG standardsExperience building and executing strategic communications campaigns and plansStrong time management and interpersonal skillsExceptional attention to detailAbility to work with executive leadership with maturity, confidence, and sound judgmentComfort with ambiguity and change; desire to join a small team in a fast-paced, start-up-like environmentDemonstrated ability to manage multiple workstreams under daily or weekly deadline pressureProficiency with Microsoft Office Suite – including Word and PowerPointSkills in editing and proofreadingBasic graphic design skills using Canva; comfort with Adobe Creative Suite is a plusExperience using Wordpress CMS; Elementor experience is a plusCompensation and Benefits$75,000 - $90,000, commensurate with experience, along with a typical benefits package.IEC is a nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC, but operating virtually with team members in multiple states. All staff should be prepared for work hours that begin no later than 10 am Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. We do not cover relocation expenses. We occasionally have in-person staff meetings in Washington, DC, and compensate for travel and lodging costs. We also provide a monthly technology stipend for equipment/internet/phone usage.
