Description

Do you thrive on diving deep into complex systems and turning that insight into big-picture, strategic thinking to create simplistic and elegant digital experiences? Foundational People Data Services (FPDS) is re-imagining how innovative people data services are designed and delivered at Amazon, for Amazonians, by Amazonians. Imagine being at the forefront of innovation by driving the design of cutting-edge experiences that empower Amazon builders to create amazing solutions powered by Amazonian data.

The FPDS team is seeking a customer-obsessed Principal UX Designer to join and lead our UX design team. This role will be responsible for defining and championing the vision for how our customers onboard, discover, share and consume the freshest employee data that powers thousands of services across Amazon. You lead with clarity and empathy, inspire others, and have a passion for solving problems at scale. You excel through innovation, creativity, and attention to detail. You are a proven strategic thinker and collaborator who flourishes working across product and engineering. You believe that design is more than aesthetics. This role is for a hands-on leader who establishes a vision and strategy, scales their impact by empowering designers and researchers, and elevates the design quality of the entire team. You will develop strong relationships with fellow design leaders across PXT and partner closely with product, engineering, and business counterparts throughout the organization to launch bar-raising experiences for customers across Amazon globally. As a creative lead, you have a passion for solving our customers' problems, always putting their needs first.

Key job responsibilities

• Lead high priority design projects that are often ambiguous and complex with multiple persona scenarios

• As a hands-on design leader, you define frameworks and methodologies to scale design; you drive adoption across teams

• Strategically balance trade-offs between competing priorities. Apply flexibility in creating solutions which meet the needs of the team, stakeholders, and customers

• Foster a customer-obsessed design culture by sharing best practices, evangelizing design principles and influencing product strategy

• Promote collaboration and facilitate communication with stakeholders at all levels and across diverse disciplines and geographies

• Work cross-functionally to drive intuitive design solutions from early concept through final implementation and iteration

• Use data and customer insights to share design solutions confidently with senior leaders

A day in the life

You’ll be meeting with stakeholders, understanding complex customer challenges, and leading your design team in the creation of innovative and intuitive experiences for technical customers spanning the Amazon Steam orgs. You’ll work closely with SDMs, PMTs, TPMs, SDEs, and Principal Engineers on the experience design, work backward planning, prioritization, risks and tradeoffs, and delivery to customers. You’ll communicate your design and research status with crisp, accurate, timely updates to leaders which earn trust. You’ll lean in, solve problems, and escalate HDTs with excellent, well-written docs. You’ll look around multiple corners, identify risks, and devise innovative ways to resolve issues while delighting your customers. You’ll coach and grow the careers of your design and research team.

About the team

Beginning in 2022, we built Foundational People Data Services, a secure, reliable, and fast way to store and consume worker data. We have helped builders across Amazon invent 7,800+ and growing experiences with our AWS-like, 1P data services which focus on the builder experience. We obsess over ensuring our data services are as foundational as electricity and water – always available, completely reliable, and convenient to use by builders. We’ve launched a secure and scalable people data store and event publishing bus; a people data catalog with federated ownership and compliance; role-based authorization and access controls to protect confidentiality; streamlined privacy reviews, depersonalization, and data subject access/deletion requests (DSARs/DSDRs); Tier-1 real-time data APIs for people data (PAPI); high-volume data transfer to the Andes data lake; and synthetic worker data to streamline testing.

We have seen rapid growth, with Amazon systems consuming 1 trillion employee records annually through billions of API calls to our 1P data services each week. We now have 5,000+ builder customer teams across AWS, Alexa, Payroll, Builder Tools, MyHR, A to Z, Clarity, GREF, Workplace Health & Safety, Time and Attendance, and more – over 75% of them are outside of People Experience & Technology (PXT). Our 1P data services offer real-time APIs and updates, powering vital end-user tools like Phone Tool (1,100+ page views per minute and 50M+ per month), Chime (800K+ calls per workday), Slack (350k+ employees and contingent workers using per workday), facilities badge access (95k+ salaried employees currently swipe in/out of their building each work day), LDAP, internal systems access, payroll, and more.
