Job DescriptionThe Director of Public Relations (Classical) is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the awareness, public image, and reputation of the Kennedy Center and its two resident artistic affiliates-the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) and Washington National Opera (WNO)-alongside distinctive music series including the Fortas Chamber Music Series and Renee Fleming VOICES. The Director's primary focus is to support the artistic vision by helping to craft key messages, actively pursuing coverage through various media channels, and influencing platforms including social media and the website. This role involves deepening relationships with arts journalists, developing new connections, and expanding feature coverage nationally and globally. The Director works closely with the marketing department to support marketing strategies and achieve revenue goals.The Director manages day-to-day operations of the PR office, directs announcements, drives media cultivation, and coordinates publicity efforts. Reporting to the VP of Public Relations, this position collaborates with senior leadership and external partners to ensure effective communication. The Director supervises a team, leads internal communications, and oversees the production of digital program content for classical programs, ensuring high-quality publications. This role plays a critical part in the Center's digital program initiatives to reduce environmental impact and increase accessibility.Key ResponsibilitiesPublicity & Media Relations:

Design and implement communications strategies, craft messages, and manage press releases for classical music offerings.Management of Staff:

Provide leadership to the team and work on PR planning and campaigns.Content Generation/Production:

Develop social media content, enhance the Center's profile through self-generated content, and engage with influencers.Digital Program Content:

Review and approve program content for classical programming.Internal Coordination:

Proactively collaborate with leadership to manage information flow and generate buzz for classical music.Special Events:

Support PR efforts for key Center events and initiatives.Finance/Budget:

Manage PR-related budget and expenses.Other duties as assigned.Key QualificationsMinimum of 8 years of PR management experience, with at least three years in a supervisory role.Demonstrated national publicity results and ability to manage complex issues.Established relationships with key media outlets, bachelor's degree required.Appreciation and knowledge of classical music preferred.Strong interpersonal, communication, and writing skills.Supervisory experience, ability to build strong teams, and handle crisis situations.Local or willing to relocate to the DMV area.Additional InformationTravel of up to 5% may be required.
