DescriptionDEFINITIONUnder supervision, performs technical work developing, implementing, and maintaining GIS layers and databases; performs GIS analysis; maintains City maps; and performs related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICSPositions in this class perform repetitive technical Geographic Information System (GIS) duties. Incumbents are expected to have sufficient knowledge to respond to a wide range of routine GIS work requests; the work is highly structured and performed in accordance with established instructions. Incumbents receive thorough instructions when tasks are initially assigned and after training are expected to perform duties without constant supervision. Work is reviewed periodically while in progress and upon completion.Examples of DutiesEstablishes and maintains GIS base map layers; prepares exhibit and location maps for various departments; researches and finds ownership and legal descriptions of properties; conducts field work using Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and mobile devices; operates a computer to research, enter, and edit routine data or to prepare graphic representations; and performs related work as required.Typical QualificationsLICENSE REQUIREDLicense:* Possession of a valid California Driver's License and a good driving record.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEEducation:* Completion of two (2) years (60 semester units) of college level coursework from anaccredited college or university in the area of Geographic Information System (GIS),Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Computer Science, Geography, Engineering, LandUse, Surveying, or a closely related field.

Experience:* Two (2) years of experience in Geographic Information System (GIS) operations.Supplemental InformationPHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS* Work is primarily sedentary and conducted in an office environment;* Good color perception;* Incumbents are required to travel within and out of City on occasion.

As determined by the City and at the City's expense, successful candidates shall be required to complete and pass a medical examination, a drug/alcohol screen, and a background investigation . Possession of a valid California Driver's License and a good driving record will be required prior to hire. Proof of citizenship or eligibility to work in the U.S. will be required at the time of hire.The examination may consist of questions relative to knowledge of English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; workstation, personal computer, and peripherals usage; Geographic Information System (GIS) and cartographic concepts; relational databases; Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri), Geographic Information System (GIS) software, ArcMap, ArcCatalog, and ArcGIS Pro; Computer-Aided Design (CAD)

(AutoCAD); basic survey principles; research methods for records and maps; geometry, algebra, and trigonometry; nomenclature, symbols, methods, practices, techniques, and instruments used in drafting and graphic arts representations. The examination may also contain questions regarding the ability to accurately perform various Geographic Information System (GIS) assignments; operate a computer accurately and efficiently; understand pertinent procedures and functions quickly and apply them without immediate supervision; operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices; maintain accurate records; read, understand, and apply moderately difficult materials; understand architectural and engineering plans and drawings; prepare graphic arts presentations; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
