Director of Liturgical Music

Please read the following job description thoroughly to ensure you are the right fit for this role before applying.The position of Director of Liturgical Music at the Church of St. Cecilia is being proposed as a part time, salaried, benefits eligible position. Possible interviews with candidates or auditions will be coordinated by a parish hiring committee. Position will be open Fall, 2024.

Responsibilities : Oversee all aspects of music for parish liturgies: two weekend Masses, Holy Days, weddings, funerals and occasional special or seasonal liturgies. Direct parish choir, schedule and prepare parish cantors and instrumentalists. Accompany congregational singing on the piano as well as prepare prelude, postlude or other incidental music to enhance the liturgy. Study scriptural and liturgical texts as guide to select music appropriate to the feast or season. Expand and strengthen repertoire of congregational song through its use of the parish’s Gather hymnal and other seasonal or supplemental resources. Maintain choral library, purchase new music. Serve as member of parish staff and parish liturgy team. Assist parish faith formation program in supporting involvement of young people in liturgical events and celebration. Collaborate with staff and volunteers in preparing liturgies, scheduling and training volunteers as well as assisting families and individuals in planning weddings and funerals. Maintain instruments, sound system and oversee set up and take down of seating, music stands and other equipment in liturgical space. Manage budget for music, musicians and technicians. Reports to pastor or administrative delegate coordinating parish operations for review and in compliance with requirements of diocese or government standards for safety, copyright adherence, etc.

Qualifications : Degree in music or related fields (e.g., music education, liturgical music). Experience directing choral music from all genres in church, school or comparable setting. Understanding of Catholic liturgical principles and ability to communicate and promote values that develop St. Cecilia’s worship tradition and practice. Ability to manage physical and mental demands of job: time competency, responsive and receptive interpersonal communication skills, ability to maintain confidentiality in pastorally sensitive situations.
