The USC Price School of Public Policy is looking for a Senior Communications Manager to oversee editorial content. This person will join an energetic and highly motivated team whose members take their jobs seriously but not themselves, who support one another and who value curiosity, hard work and a healthy work-life balance. This position reports to the Senior Associate Dean, Communication. This position is located on the USC Los Angeles University Park Campus. Hybrid work arrangement.

This person’s primary task will be to oversee all off the department’s editorial content including news stories and features, press releases and editorial planning – and anything else involving words and the images that compliment them. Duties include supervising one full-time staff writer and free-lance writers, as needed. This person also oversees media relations including pitching story ideas to the media, either alone or in collaboration with University Communications Department. They will be a member of an editorial team that works closely with an events team to plan compelling webinars and with the school’s Online Education and Digital Media department, which is responsible for social media.

Primary Responsibilities: Publications

Coordinate, assign and edit editorial content

Write editorial content

Select photos for editorial content in collaboration with other team members

Remain up to date on current events and be able to recognize breaking news that could make for good editorial content and/or media opportunities for faculty

Manage the school’s subscription to The Conversation by alerting faculty to opportunities to write for the outlet. Help write pitch letters to The Conversation

Use Google Analytics and/or similar tools to track and analyze performance of editorial content

Assemble and edit monthly newsletters

Stay up to date on best practices for engaging audiences with editorial and advertising content, including on social media

Write copy for social media posts related to editorial content

Perform related duties as assigned

Media Relations:

Work with the team to develop a media relations strategy to increase profile of USC Price faculty and strengthen the school’s brand

Develop media relations strategy for specific announcements: handle the who, what, where, when and how of announcements, selecting reporters to contact, writing pitch letters, prepping spokespeople, tacking coverage, etc.

Mentor the department’s full-time writer

Oversee reports tracking impact of media coverage

Act as liaison between faculty and reporters

Advise faculty of the desirability of engaging in specific interviews

Qualifications:

Write and edit well

Have curiosity

Have a keen eye for and aversion to jargon and bloviation

Possess a bachelor’s degree in something that involved writing and editing

Be able to work Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign and Photoshop

Have a minimum of five years of relevant experience

Show willingness to learn and use team collaboration tools such as Slack, Box and Asana

Compensation

The annual base salary range for this position is $119,632- $141,452. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
