The Role

Fidelity Investments is seeking a Principal Technical Writer to join its UDE COE. An ideal candidate will bring the right mix of information organization, content orchestration and technology insights, along with the process and production skills needed to keep pace with fast-moving product development.

The Center of Excellence organization within Fidelity Enterprise Technology & Global Services will provide the base from which this Principal Technical Writer will produce easy-to-understand content that explains complex processes to its developer workforce. This effort will ultimately provide Fidelity with a universal asset catalog.

The ideal candidate for the position is an experienced business professional with at least 7+ years of technical writing experience who has previous tenure in creating and documenting complex technology components, justification for their use, and policies that guide them, culminating in a centralized asset catalog. The candidate should be comfortable working as an individual contributor within an agile environment as a shared technical documentation professional. Candidate must also excel in collaborating with multiple teams across Fidelity.

Job Responsibilities
  • Building standards, processes, and documentation for a catalog of products/components that are discoverable through effective standardization, taxonomy, tagging and indexing.
  • Proactively connecting with product owners to gather information required for populating the catalog content.
  • Working as an individual contributor with multiple product owners to gather information about their product/components/technologies and then modularizing, standardizing, and preparing them for consumption by technology and product audiences.
  • Participate in defining the look and feel of knowledge management, content management, and related information systems.
  • Applying previous experience with CMS systems and giving feedback on required features for a CMS that may be configured or integrated with other document sources.
  • Working with development and engineering to understand technical products and how they function in order to write concise, prescriptive content at concept, policy, guide, and reference levels.
  • Creating diagrams, process flows, architectures and the like in common tools like Figma or Gliffy that convey complex technical concepts, systems, and mental models in simple line drawing formats.
  • Understanding team processes end-to-end and how they correlate to applications, products, components, and standards.
  • Contributing to and ensure documentation adheres to a shared style guide.
  • Managing (organize, draft, finalize and publish) content that documents system functions according to established standards regarding structure, order, conciseness, style, and terminology.
  • Collaborating with wide ranging team members to ensure content is consistent across sources and within the catalog.
  • Conforming to evolving priorities driven by product initiatives, training, and developer experience requirements.
  • Defining and following processes that ensure materials are accurate and receive required reviews and approvals.
  • Developing standards for technical documentation and overall DocOps in partnership with all collaborating organizations and UDE.


The Expertise and Skills You Bring
  • Workflow and service design assessment of existing and/or emerging information systems.
    • Includes visual, conversational, information architecture, prototyping, strategic design methods (such as design thinking, object-oriented documentation, Information Mapping, and content modularization), user research, and/or testing.
  • Working knowledge of various Content Management Systems
  • Prior experience working with application development documentation, standards, and the like either as a hybrid information architect or senior technical writer
  • Familiarity with structured, business outcome and topic-based authoring, information architecture, content/meta tagging, indexing, linking strategies, and the like
  • Successful experiences working with diverse sets of stakeholders to solve complex document management and DocOps problems to achieve positive business outcomes.
  • Experience writing technical subject matter strongly preferred, software development lifecycle knowledge also a plus
  • Communications skills with the ability to tailor messages for target audiences
  • Willingness to adapt to changing business needs and deadlines


The Team

The UDE COE is a nimble group of senior design and technology professionals focused on improving all aspects of the Developer Experience at Fidelity. This team ensures sets expectations and provides support to all who impact these experiences. Product owners define and maintain the key tools, platforms, assets, and information resources developers use on a daily basis, at ever stage of the Software Development Life Cycle. Contributing writers, designers, and researchers provide additional support to this team as goals and priorities are clarified and evolve.

Fidelity's working model blends the best of working offsite with maximizing time together in person to meet associate and business needs. Currently, most hybrid roles require associates to work onsite all business days of one assigned week per four-week period (beginning in September 2024, the requirement will be two full assigned weeks).
