Job Description:
The Wall Street Journal Opinion section is looking for a New York-based writer/editor to lead our growing newsletter team and provide regional news commentary that reflects the Journal editorial page's free market philosophy. The goal is to target a new and broader audience particularly interested in region-specific content by delivering high-quality, compelling commentary and insights on developments in the states with a focus on politics and economics. This writer/editor would report to the Editorial Page Editor and partner with the editorial board and editorial features team to produce a twice-weekly newsletter that would also publish as a column, and would generate significant editorial spin-offs. This position requires a professional background in editorial writing and commentary, as well as strong experience with newsletter formats.
This role will be a key leader on a small team. As such, we're looking for a high-energy, collaborative team player with demonstrated management experience. This person should be a strong communicator who is excited about partnering with colleagues across the Opinion section, including editorial board members, features editors, data, SEO, social media, etc. The ideal candidate will also be comfortable reacting to data and audience feedback to produce content that resonates with current and new audiences.

Pay Range: $130,000 - $160,000

Responsibilities include:
- Write and curate a twice-a-week states-focused newsletter and column with a heavy emphasis on regional political and economic issues that reflect the Journal editorial page's free market philosophy
- Manage a small team of opinion writers in researching and selecting region-specific topics that are of interest to the Journal's Opinion audience; develop arguments and write persuasive opinion articles for the newsletter/column
- Work with the Editorial Page Editor, Opinion Managing Editor and other editorial page stakeholders to execute a clear strategy for the newsletter that is informed by audience insights and data
- Work closely with the Opinion section's data, SEO, and social media teams to build an audience and find opportunities to bring our journalism to new readers via email and other platforms
- Work with editorial board members, editorial writers, columnists and features editors to share their reporting in newsletter form, as well as collaborate on editorial spin-offs that would publish in the Review & Outlook section
- Participate in editorial board meetings
Strong candidates will have the following skills and experience:
- College graduate with 8+ years of reporting and writing experience, preferably with an emphasis on political and economic content.
- It is essential that candidates be familiar with the ideas, philosophy and principles for which the Wall Street Journal editorial page stands.
- A demonstrated record of success in growing and engaging audiences via email
- Flexible to work weekends/evening hours as news developments may warrant
- High level of proficiency in writing
- Demonstrates a command of editing and digital headline writing, especially for inboxes
- The ability to work under deadline pressure
