Job Purpose

Plan, develop, coordinate, and manage various utility marketing/sales strategies, objectives, and programs for all Utility products and services. Perform market research, product planning, and guide advertising and sales functions to accomplish established goals and objectives.

Primary Duties

Operations

  • Responsible for all aspects of the Marketing and customer education functions of MPW, ensuring that activities are aligned with Utility goals and objectives, and comply with all applicable regulations and policies. This includes:
    • Approve and edit all written communications to customers and employees coming from the Marketing & Sales department, including MPW News, MPW Update, mass emails to customers, social media postings, and major mailings involving any of the utilities.
    • Oversee the updating and maintenance of mpw.org and inside.mpw, ensuring they are up-to-date and consistent with printed pricing and promotional material.
    • Ensure that all required annual publications and customer notifications occur as needed.
  • Responsible for all the development of objectives, policies, and programs for all marketing and sales activities for the Communications Utility's products and services, ensuring that activities are aligned with Utility goals and objectives, and comply with all applicable regulations and policies. This includes:
    • Development of the annual marketing plan to drive goals and objectives for the Communications Utility, including special marketing and sales promotions for all classes of service, and develop performance indicators to measure results.
    • Oversee the gathering of pricing information from competitors and industry-wide sources. Analyze the information and make recommendations for all Communications Utility products and services.
    • Monitor market research and product planning function and recommend new products and services based on research.
    • Formulate 10-year market penetration financial forecasts and customer retention analyses based on market research, analysis of prior years' results, and industry trends.
    • Schedule and oversee product marketing demonstrations and customer education events that will enhance sales.
  • Manage the Advertising Sales Representative and Business Development/Technical Services personnel, ensuring goals and objectives are met through appropriate sales strategies, quotas, territory definition, customer relationships, and employee development.
  • Promote local public access channel involving producing, directing, and narrating various local programming.

Communications and Leadership

  • Supervise and evaluate the Marketing & Sales personnel and coordinate the operation of the department in the most efficient and cost-effective manner. This includes:
    • Make recommendations for hiring, promotion, evaluation, discharge, or other disciplinary action.
    • Provide guidance to staff regarding work procedures, technical issues, work priorities, and special requests.
    • Monitor work schedule for department, including the review and approval of payroll for the department.
    • Assess, actively develop, and set goals with employees to assist in their preparation for future growth within the Utility.
  • Identify and prepare for succession planning needs within the department and develop employees as necessary to meet those needs.

Financial Management

  • Develop the annual operating budget and appropriate projections for the department.
  • Review area's compliance with the budget on a monthly basis.

Organizational Effectiveness

  • Support the Director, Customer & Technology Experience with public relations efforts for the Utility.
  • Serve as the primary contact for marketing of communications services.
  • Support and coordinate efforts with the Manager, Customer Services and Manager, Telecommunications for the telecommunications area of the Utility, including the design, development, and implementation of products and services.
    • Work with Customer Services department to obtain appropriate demographic information from the customer information system, identify training needs for internal staff and customers, and implement/present training programs as appropriate.
    • Work with Communications department to ensure adequate equipment inventories are on-hand for promotions and that field customer education efforts are successful.
    • Work with Programming Committee on programming and retransmission agreements.
  • Develop/maintain a culture of continuous improvement within the department. Utilize lean principles and other continuous improvement tools in an effort to maximize the efficiency of the department.
  • Develop effective working relationships and partnerships with other department managers.

Safety & Risk Management

  • Develop/maintain a culture of safety within the department. Support the Utility's safety programs, ensure adequate training, and provide safe working conditions and practices.
Position Requirements
Qualifications

Knowledge

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Minimum 7 years of marketing/sales management experience; telecommunications service provider experience preferred. A master's degree may substitute for up to 2 years of experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of marketing principles and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of the telecommunications utility industry; electric and water experience preferred.

Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and listening skills, with ability to build productive professional relationships and promote a team atmosphere.
  • Proficiency with use of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Publisher at an intermediate level.
  • Keen sense of design that aligns with MPW's persona(s) to guide various collateral development on MPW's behalf.
  • Good judgment and reasoning skills.
  • Problem identification, analysis, and solving.
  • Project management skills.
  • Strong customer relations skills, including the ability to influence or defuse as needed.
  • Strong leadership skills to influence, motivate, increase productivity, promote teamwork, and maintain a positive image both within the department and as a representative and employee of the utility.
  • Strong presentation skills and able to present to audiences of all sizes.
  • Good math and analytical skills for analyzing data and market trends.
  • Good market research analysis, promotional development, and sales planning skills. Must be able to identify trends and industry activity or directions.

  • Ability to work as part of a team, either as team leader or a member of a team.
  • Ability to think strategically but also focus on tactical and operational issues.
  • Ability to drive results and ensure work is accomplished properly, safely, and in a timely manner.
  • Ability to use discretion in maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive information.
  • Ability to discern preferences, dislikes and nuances, adjusting messaging to authentically embody the voice of the MPW persona(s).
  • Ability to remain current on communications products and services, including customer education and awareness methods.
Other Position Requirements
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to attend work on a regular basis.
  • Must be able to travel for work.
  • Must maintain a method of communication in order to be contacted by MPW outside normal work hours.
Work Environment
  • Work environment is primarily in an office environment. Attendance at community events required.
  • Must comply with all safety and site rules at all locations.
