Department Summary

The Division of Research and Innovation has a skill and talent gap in the area of communications. There is a need to update the website for internal and external customers, drive communication and engagement both internally and externally, and consistently deliver opportunities for our experts to deliver value to the community through media placements and editorial commentary. This position will coordinate across the Division and closely coordinate with the centralized Marketing and Communications unit.

Position Overview

The Communications Director for the Division of Research and Innovation serves as the division's communications strategist and communications coordinator for units within the division. The Director plans and oversees the creation and implementation of internal and external communications through a variety of channels including print, web, and social media; division branding; and promotions and marketing. Works with the leaders of Institutes and Centers to reach specific audiences in programming, development, undergraduate and graduate recruitment, faculty recruitment, and other outreach efforts.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and six (6) years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to conceptualize, plan and organize multiple programs and assignments effectively
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to be flexible and ability to maintain a strong commitment to building and sustaining relationships
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, conduct multiple tasks and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work effectively within a team and work closely with other staff, faculty, and students toward a common goal.
  • Understanding of institutional strategy (or ability to quickly assimilate) and ability to integrate the strategy into modes of communication
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of communications, marketing, and branding practices.
  • Skill in Microsoft Office and Microsoft Windows navigation.
  • Strong business acumen, excellent leadership skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience managing marketing collateral design.
  • Familiarity with development process for print and digital communications channels, including website and broadcast.

Job Duties:
  • Serve as the senior communications strategy officer for the Division overseeing a robust, integrated, strategic communication plan to achieve objectives and goals. Bring together all facets of strategic messaging, media relations, print and online communications, issues and crisis management, and messaging in coordination with the communications team at UNTHSC.
  • Based on strategic objectives in communications, plans and develops content for the website to effectively promote the division, provides strategic leadership in identifying media/communications for targeted audiences, and writes and/or edits talking points and speeches as requested.
  • Proactively seeks interesting news and stories from departments and program directors based on current business topics. Work with UNTHSC Office of Marketing and Communications to arrange press conferences and media coverage of events.
  • Coordinate and maintain a robust social media program based on sound strategy.
  • Coordinate media tours on new program launches or innovative initiatives, participate in strategic planning efforts, and assist with the production of special events as needed.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate system of internal controls for management of communications, branding, and community relations activities.
