Gannett and USA TODAY/ usatoday.com is seeking a strategic, collaborative, and creative media leader to guide continuous transformation and grow that USA Today as Editor in Chief. This is the senior-most role in the USA Today newsroom, an opportunity to shape news and information products that serve hundreds of millions of readers, viewers, and listeners across the country.

This manifests through all of the journalism and information products created by USA Today, from our digital offerings to our print publications, podcasts, newsletters, and video. The person in this role will embrace a smart sense of urgency as well as innovation and experimentation with purpose to amplify our work and extend its reach. Equally, this person must be an eager collaborator with partners across the Gannett organization, leveraging the audience to drive revenue and prove that good journalism is great business.The person in this role will report to the Senior Vice President at USA Today and work with her to set the strategic vision for a brand with the potential to be America’s newspaper. The Editor in Chief must be able to operate as a highly effective business leader with a firm understanding of budget management, revenue models, and a first-rate ability to communicate the why of what we do to our staff and our customers alike. She or he will deploy all resources to a purpose, marshaling data to understand our audience’s ever-changing needs and expectations and rallying a tremendous team of journalists around the purpose and mission.Requirements:Bachelor's or master’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.At least eight to ten years of experience as a successful leader of a large news team or newsroom.A commitment to dramatically improving the diversity of our news team so that it reflects the fullness of the communities we serve nationwide.Fluency with data analytics used to amplify journalism, grow the audience, and drive subscriptions.Experience experimenting with purpose to improve the value proposition of consumer products.The demonstrated ability to lead, inspire, and convey knowledge to people at all levels of the organization.An ability to engage in the ideas space, including a willingness to hear one’s own ideas stress-tested and the desire to hold open space for competing alternatives.Comfort with a persistent state of change and smart urgency that is the hallmark of a digital media environment.Application InstructionsWe are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role.
