The WVU Extension Service is currently accepting applications for a (Hybrid) Multimedia Specialist.About the OpportunityAs the Multimedia Specialist, you will manage print and digital graphic design, branding, accessibility, and multimedia graphics for the Division for Land-Grant Engagement, including WVU Extension, Davis College and the WVU Center for Community Engagement. Duties include, but are not limited to, the: creation of print and digital content (social media, website, video), flyers, programs and internal resource pages; development and creation of recruitment materials for prospective students, including Davis and Extension students; and oversight and coordination of projects including managing production timelines/deadlines, collaborating with team members, supervisors, faculty, staff and leadership. The role is responsible for cooperatively creating and developing materials, both print and digital, while promoting the brand of the Division, as well as each individual unit's brand, voice, accessibility (ADA), diversity, equity and inclusion standards.We strongly believe in work-life balance and keeping time for things we love outside our work. What you'll do:Lead and participate in client meetings to identify and prioritize project ideas and strategic goals.Serve as the lead creative designer or as part of the creative services team to plan and execute print and digital media projects, including high profile and high traffic websites, social media design, print pieces and other mission-critical, media-intensive projects.Provide relevant and meaningful conceptual design ideas and examples for projects to clients based on prior consultations.Design artwork and digital artifacts for the Division and its three units, including web templates/pages, and print pieces. Use and enhance photographs and digital media imagery as design elements to create high visual impact and produce artistic elements for print and digital platforms, including video.Travel independently to on- and off-campus locations as necessary for project meetings, to capture digital media, special events, etc.Receive and incorporate ongoing feedback from clients and team members to produce the best product possible.Design headers, footers and elements for third-party applications as needed to properly support the WVU Division for Land-Grant's visual image and its three units.Responsible for providing oversight for graphic design applications for creative services, making sure files, separations, and other technical aspects are prepared according to printing parameters for electronic, print and other graphic production applications.Manage production of in-house printing and other projects that can be produced in house for cost-saving measures.When applicable, meet with printers and other vendors to discuss details and problems that may occur and to plan project production.Work as a team member on other Communications team projects, when appropriate, to provide suggestions, alternatives, or options to assist in making creative decisions as a project demands.Estimate time(s) for performing the production functions of each project; prepares comprehensive specifications of projects for bidding purposes for editor and supervisor to complete production estimates.Enforce compliance with WVU and Division (and its units) established marketing and branding guidelines. Analyzes printing needs and recommends cost-saving methods.Use both PC hardware and software (Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Reader and Editor), uses scanning equipment to scan art photos and visuals, electronically manipulating art, photos and visuals according to design, to other file formats as needed (EPS, PDF, JPEG, GIF, TIF, HTML, etc.). Uses large format in-house printer, as needed.Regularly review literature and recent developments in the field of design and technology.Maintain current knowledge of content design, development, software, hardware, accessibility standards, compliance standards, guidelines and best practices.Attend relevant training and conferences dedicated to digital media creation, design, content management, accessibility, communications and management.Maintain proficiency in industry-current design and imagining software and latest technology industry standards for printed and web-based materials.

AccessibilityCreate and assist in making accessible and compliant documents that pass WCAG 2.0 compliance standards, this includes but not limited to: correctly styling and structuring of documents, tagging, attaching alternative text descriptions, hyperlinks, and threading documents within InDesign software to ensure proper reading order.Help build, maintain and manage accessible Word document templates for use online to ensure they include clean styles, properly tagged links, images with alternative text anchored, and tables with established headings. Supports and trains others who use the templates.Work within Word and InDesign documents to ensure styles are encoded with the proper hierarchies and structure needed to meet document accessibility and conducts thorough clearing out of additional code or irrelevant styles.Import styles from clean accessible Word documents into InDesign to ensure that all styles were correctly imported or reattach proper style.Ensure all document titles, authors, keywords, and language details are included during exports. Review settings and export options to ensure exports are done properly.Routinely use Contrast Checker tools to ensure documents include proper visual contrast so readers can clearly distinguish between the background and text within a document as determined by WCAG 2.0 standards.Test documents using the PDF accessibility checker and various other tools to continue to improve the process and overall document accessibility. Troubleshoot and help resolve problems associated with document accessibility.Work with communications specialists and clients to ensure documents have proper alternative text, as well as tables, charts, and graphs contain summaries and/or are properly formatted and ready for document inclusion.

Marketing and Integrated Marketing CommunicationsSupport marketing strategies for WVU, Division for Land-Grant Engagement and its units.Understand audiences for each individual project and appropriately targets each audience with the proper information in the most appropriate format.Assist colleagues in developing goals related to content management and digital media projects.Evaluate and adapt content from other (offline and online) sources, adhering to copyright and institutional policies.Integrate visual, print, web content, social media and other related media standards into work for WVU, Division for Land-Grant Engagement and its units.Design content for web/digital delivery with the understanding that it may need to be repurposed in different mediums or formats for delivery to diverse audiences.Participate in regular meetings with creative, production, and communications teams -- supplies reports as requested.Collaborate with faculty, staff and writer/editor(s) as it relates to digital media creation.

Leadership and SupervisionWork cooperatively as a member of the Communications team, assisting faculty and staff of differing backgrounds and expertise to support a diverse and often dispersed clientele.Inform professionals, volunteers and others as needed, about print and digital media design issues, current trends and best practices for improving their own products, how to effectively use hardware and software, as well as various proprietary and open-source programs.Educate and train faculty, staff and clients the importance of building accessible templates for digital use with styled hierarchy and how to use them correctly.Supervise students, interns, volunteers and other third-party vendors involved in the Division's print and digital creations.Mentor students, intern, volunteer and others, as needed and appropriate.Serve on committees and teams, as needed and required.Promptly reports any perceived issues, problems or violations, as needed and appropriate.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual design, multimedia or related fieldTwo (2) years of experience in creating and designing for digital and print communications, including web and social mediaDemonstrated experience in creating visually appealing content to engage diverse audiences, including recruitment materials, educational materials, digital content (infographics, web graphics, etc.).Strong knowledge of branding and copyright, including trademark and licensing, logo use, etc.Knowledge of various design software including Adobe Creative Suite, web content management systems, photography and other creative platforms.Demonstrated understanding of marketing standards, industry practices and consumer trends as related to digital and print media.Demonstrated skill in analyzing situations and providing sound professional judgement on problems dealing with sensitive and sometimes confidential issues.Demonstrated ability in creating multimedia features, including galleries and presentations, to support and enhance the WVU Division for Land-Grant Engagement's programming and operations.Ability to work under continuous time constraints and multiple deadline pressures manage priorities effectively.Demonstrated commitment to principles of community and diversity.
