Schedule: Varied (Approximately 15 hours per week)

General Purpose:Under general direction and using excellent customer service skills, the purpose of the position is to assist patrons with circulation, research, and computer use, assist and instruct patrons on use of electronic and print resources and library technology. This is accomplished by processing returned materials, checking out to patrons, issuing new library cards, placing materials on hold, collecting fines and fees, guiding computer use, answering reference questions, and shelving library materials. Clerk will open and close library facilities. This list is not meant to be all-inclusive, other duties may be assigned.

Supervision received: The Library Clerk works under general direction of the Library Director.

Examples of Duties:Manages materials for library guests by using the computer to check materials in and out, record due dates, managing holds and requests, renewing materials for patrons and providing information about accounts.Assists with maintenance of circulation records.Issues new library cards by verifying patron information, stating the current policies of the library and the limits on materials, and answering questions and inquiries from the patrons.Shelving library materials by retrieving materials from the drop-box, assessing materials for repairs, transporting books and materials to the correct location, placing books and materials on the shelf in the correct order and rearranging books and materials as needed.Assists in processing materials for cataloging, as directed.Keep the library and work areas tidy, attractive, and engaging. Does a shift-walk through at the beginning and end to maintain cleanliness and order.Promotes library usage by participating in creation of library displays and literacy through book/video sharing.Assists librarian with preparation of reports and maintenance of records related to the Texas State Library. This is supported by accurate record keeping and special assignment.Setup, participate, and takedown with Family Place and other programs.Utilize library volunteers and community service workers.attend staff meetings, training sessions, professional development workshops and other meetings or training as deemed necessary. Occasional travel to cities within one hour for workshops.Opens and closes library facilities computers, office equipment, and other search tools.Runs Cash Register daily and complete a weekly total on one specific day per week.Manages fines, fees and other financial transactions according to policy.Notify patron by phone that books/DVDs are ready for pickup.Take inventory of front desk supplies and notify library assistant when items are low.Place patron requests on the order list.Maintain daily count of patrons, computer use, new library cards, and notary appointments on log sheet.Empty the book drop daily.Maintain food pantry donations.Maintain Lobby book donation/shelf area.Ensure that library card applications are copied and stapled and the rack filled. Have a minimum of 100 adult and child apps/cards in the drawer.Weeding of books and DVDs.Perform special projects as needed.Work on Texas Book Consignments and Better World Book Consignments.Total the volunteer hours on the 1st Tuesday of each month.Other duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experiencea. Education: High School Diploma or GED; some college preferredb. Any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job.

Must possess a valid State of Texas Driver's License.Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check.Ability to speak a second language preferred, but not required.Customer service and cash handling (Cash Handling course must be completed within 1 year of employment).

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:The Dewey Decimal System; Basic principles of business letter writing and basic report preparation; Principles and practices of mail collection and distribution; Basic mathematical principles; English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; Principles and procedures of filing; Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment; Typing and/or word processing techniques; ALA (American Libraries Association) Privacy and Confidentiality Rules.

Skills in:General office procedures and in the operation of standard office equipment, including but not limited to phone system, fax machine, copy machine, computer keyboard, and Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook); time management; self-motivation; observation in order to read, sort and shelve library materials and maintain catalog records; Cash Handling.

Ability to:Provide prompt, courteous and friendly service to all library visitors, whether in person, by telephone, or other methods of communication; Demonstrate mature and consistent problem-solving skills; Maintain strict confidentiality; Work well under pressure; detail/deadline oriented; Communicate both orally and in writing; Follow instructions precisely; Develop and maintain a positive working relationship with fellow employees, supervisors, and general public; to use initiative and independent judgment in a variety of situations; Work evenings and weekends; Work overtime as needed; Maintain a professional appearance and attitude; Sit and stand for extended periods of time; Lift office supplies and library materials up to 25lbs; Moderate to ongoing technology proficiency; Operate office machines (fax, scanners and copiers) for patrons; work independently as the sole staff member on duty.
