General Statement of Job

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Admissions and Enrolment, the Director of Marketing serves as the university's chief marketing officer, supervising staff, budgets and programs in the Office of University Relations and Marketing (URM). The director's primary responsibility is to lead strategic brand positioning and development of marketing campaigns to advance Missouri Southern, most notably in new student recruitment. The director will work closely with leadership from across the institution to elevate and refine the University's marketing and branding.

Upon beginning work, the Director of Marketing will conduct a thorough audit of current marketing initiatives to understand the existing strategy and then identify opportunities to further enhance the University's reputation. Ultimately, the director will take the lead in framing a comprehensive marketing and branding strategy for MSSU that achieves the University's strategic plan goals, most notably in the areas of enrollment and community engagement.

Essential Duties:

Build and manage an outstanding strategic marketing and branding program which can be considered best-in-class compared to its peers in higher education.

Create and implement innovative, creative, and proactive marketing campaigns with a unified messaging extending across all media, platforms, and vehicles.

Evaluate the effectiveness and success of MSSU's positioning and brand with different internal and external audiences on an ongoing basis.

Strategically invest time and resources in market research, competitive landscape analysis, brand and marketing refinement, and creative execution. As appropriate, utilize external counsel to broaden the institution's options across all platforms and vehicles.

Build strong, collaborative, and collegial relationships with campus leaders, both academic and administrative, seeking to understand their specific priorities and identify ways to create individualized programs that integrate with the University's overall brand.

Collaborate closely with the Offices of the President, Admissions, Development, and Intercollegiate Athletics, which play a significant role in the public perception of the university. Ensure that they are well supported in their work and that there is a constant flow of communication regarding positioning and marketing initiatives in those areas.

Collaborate closely with the Director of Communication and External Relations, ensuring consistency in messaging across all media, both earned and paid.

Set clear direction and priorities for the staff in the Office of University Relations and Marketing. Continually assess staff strengths and recruit / retain a high-quality, diverse team. Within that office, foster an environment that rewards new ideas and risk taking, builds confidence, and encourages teamwork and creativity.

Oversees and manages events like Third Thursday, Green and Gold Tours, etc. in collaboration with other departments across campus.

Performs other related duties as required.

Education, Experience, and Licenses

A bachelor's degree from an accredited university is required, with a master's degree preferred.

Experience envisioning and implementing successful strategic marketing and branding programs is required, preferably in higher education.

Preference given to those candidates with exceptional knowledge of the latest digital and integrated marketing tools with experience leveraging internal skill.

Also preferred is a record of success as an innovative and collaborative leader in large, complex, mission-driven organizations with numerous and distributed stakeholders, shared decision making, and often rapidly shifting priorities.

A solid understanding of the advantages and drawbacks of both traditional and digital media, the potential for and hazards of paid advertising, and how best to convey information in ways that engage and excite constituents.

A proactive professional with a spirit of initiative, innovation, and the ability to juggle multiple priorities, programs, and projects in a fast-paced environment.
