Your Opportunity

Stantec’s Buildings Specialty Lighting practice is expanding and looking for a Senior Lighting Designer to join our growing team. This position will be in Stantec's Boston, Massachusetts office at 40 Water Street and will be responsible to grow Stantec’s lighting design presence in the Boston area and beyond.

The main purpose of this position is to support the growth of Stantec’s Lighting Design practice. You will be the advocate of the Practice both internally within Stantec and externally to clients and professional organizations within the region.

You will be familiar with the local market and the project pipeline that feeds your teams. You will typically lead or support positioning and proposal efforts, depending on the scale and complexity of the opportunities. Pursuits relevant to your Practice in your geographical region are typically led by you or delegated to a partner team member. You will work closely with regional Business Center leaders, principals, and design teams. In addition to your regional focus, you will collaborate with our broader team of 15 dedicated lighting specialists that support our US Buildings multidisciplinary practice.

You will ensure that you and your teams are fully utilized on projects or when in periods of low project work, focus on activity that creates value and collaboration across the full lighting design team. You will work to ensure projects are adequately resourced to meet project requirements and that your teams are trained and appropriately skilled. You will continually seek work to support and grow your teams.

Stantec's Lighting Design team offers talented professionals the opportunity to transform visions into designs that illuminate some of the most impressive buildings in the world. The candidate would be responsible for internal business development, project management, and leading all lighting design aspects of projects. This includes the development of design solutions, coordination with the design team, owner, and junior staff, overseeing luminaire selection, lighting controls, energy code compliance, documentation, details, construction administration budgeting and fee management. The preferred candidate will be a motivated self-starter that enjoys working collaboratively alongside other creative minds and problem solvers in a team setting.

Your Key Responsibilities

Grow the lighting design practice internally within Stantec and externally in your regional market.

Initiate and manage business development opportunities, actively participate in and lead client service through establishing and maintaining strong relationships.

Ensure the business delivers work that secures repeat business for valued clients.

Participate in projects as either Project Manager, Senor Designer or other substantive technical or delivery role.

Responsible for the team’s talent management lifecycle including but not limited to; recruitment suggestions, career development, employee engagement, succession planning, coaching and mentoring, diversity and inclusion, and leadership development

Management of current and future workloads/staffing levels within the regional team to achieve attainment of work received and utilization targets whilst ensuring high staff morale.

Gain and earn the trust of design teams and the regional office leadership group.

Coordinates with architects, engineers, and other disciplines in the built environment for successful design implementation.

Participates in local and regional client and industry events.

Meet financial performance targets and delivers projects within budget.

Lead/Assist with developing proposals, scopes, and fees for project opportunities.

Implement and oversee design development and document of lighting and control systems designs.

Research, prepare, and present coordinated design options.

Review drawings and research code issues to comply with city, state, and standards regulations.

Communicate with manufacturers, design team, and contractors to address challenges and develop practical designs solutions.

Editing of technical specifications for lighting and control related sections.

Maintains current knowledge of technologies and trends, as they apply to the applicable project and market types, and continually strengthens skills.

Collaborate with the larger Specialty Lighting team within Stantec for shared resources, staffing, oversight and design excellence implementation.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Professional experience specific to lighting design and control systems in a variety of projects including, but not limited to, commercial office spaces, educational facilities, healthcare facilities, multifamily residential, hospitality, performance venues, and transportation.

Work with project delivery teams and different Practice Leaders to drive quality and timely delivery of project deliverables to meet and exceed client expectations.

Familiarity with, and ability to produce, project-related documents, including sketches, graphic packages, and reports to appropriate standards.

Knowledge of applicable codes and standards applicable to the industry.

Familiarity with and ability to apply sustainable design principles within projects, including LEED and WELL Building Standard.

Ability to prepare and review detailed drawings.

Ability to review detailed drawings and research and present design options.

Ability to read, interpret, and act upon information included in specifications, submittals, RFIs, etc.

Ability to work independently with full remote support from the entire Stantec Lighting Design group when needed.

Regional and out-of-state travel is required on occasion.

This position will report to and be required to work within the Boston, Massachusetts office five days a week to start for onboarding. Presence in the Boston, Massachusetts office is required a minimum of three days per week after onboarding.

Can-do collaborative team approach to project work and assignments.

Familiarity with BIM applications such as Revit, SketchUp, Enscape, Navisworks, Lumion, Rhino.

Able to apply best practices of appropriate content for lighting drawings (plans, elevations, sections, and details), calculations, and specifications.

Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills.

Strong prioritization and time-management skills.

Competent knowledge of photometric tools such as AGI32 or LightStanza, photometric toolbox, and IES files.

Education and Experience

Bachelors' degree in related design field or equivalent combination of education and experience. The related experience shall be predominately in architectural lighting design.

Minimum of 10 years of related work experience, business development, leadership, financial management, and consulting experience; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Preferred Auxiliary Qualifications:

Professional IALD or IES membership

LEED or WELL accredited professional

Certified Lighting Designer (CLD) or Lighting Certified (LC).
