About The Jcc East Bay

The JCC East Bay is a welcoming home for people of all ages and life stages. Inspired by Jewish values, culture, and tradition, we build interpersonal relationships, foster learning and curiosity, and offer accessible pathways to Jewish life. The JCC's core programs include early childhood education and preschool; camp and afterschool programs; teen engagement; older adult activities; intergenerational Jewish holiday celebrations; and ongoing opportunities to connect with Jewish life and our richly diverse community. The JCC East Bay operates from three locations: our full-service building in Berkeley, an afterschool program at Joaquin Miller Elementary in Oakland, and administrative offices on our soon to be flagship campus in Oakland.

Edah is a pathway of the Berkeley Afterschool program for children in grades K-5, where children engage in authentic and meaningful Hebrew-rich integrative Jewish learning experiences designed to respond to their individual interests and needs.

Position Summary

An Edah Educator will be responsible for nurturing the learning, culture, and growth of the Edah afterschool program. They will care deeply and work passionately with children and educators, and facilitate a number of different Hebrew language infused learning opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications:

Classroom Planning

Plan and design art activities and lesson plans for the Berkeley Afterschool program and the Edah pathway.Design art projects that are appropriate for different ages and learners.Integrate Hebrew to the art curriculum as well as Hebrew lessons.Contribute to continual development of the Edah program and curriculum.Work with the Senior Director of Jewish Learning to ensure that lesson plans are achieving desired goals.

Student Support

Work directly with students and support all aspects of the Edah afterschool program.Work according to individual and specific plans of students.Commitment to the mission of the JCC East Bay and knowledge of or commitment to learning about the Jewish community, values, and traditions.Work with administration on parent communication, and various administrative responsibilities.Engage in marketing and outreach for Edah and the JCC East Bay. Support participant recruitment when possible.Background and experience in Jewish education and arts education.Hebrew language fluency (native or very strong).Experience in a childcare setting or equivalent experience.BA in Education, Arts, or a related field.Excellent communication skills.Ability to organize tasks, and develop and implement plans to efficiently meet organizational goals.Ability to lead a classroom of children.Ability to work in a team.Ability to push/pull and lift/carry objects weighing 50 pounds.Ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time.Ability to sit on floors and chairs, and to get up and down quickly.Ability to bend from knees and waist to help a child.Ability to maneuver in confined lavatories to aid children with toilet needs.Ability to respond without delay to needs of young children.

Founded in 1978 as the Berkeley-Richmond JCC, we continue to evolve to meet the community's needs. Serving over 9,000 people each year, the JCC plays an important role as a communal gathering place, celebrating people of all ages, backgrounds, and types of observance.

The Berkeley branch, which is a historic landmark building, is home to an award-winning preschool, a vibrant afterschool program, and spaces for the entire community to come together. The JCC also offers large afterschool programs onsite at two Oakland public schools.
